Really enjoyed attending the brunch benefit for @sahareducation to learn how they are giving women and girls in #afghanistan access to #education! Thought I would wear one of the new Afghan chokers I received in the latest shipment from Peshawar, #Pakistan. Huge thanks to Jack Caradoc, editor of @the_candymans_trumpet poetry journal for making this happen. I had earlier shared Marwa’s poem with Jack for a possible publication in his journal. As most of you know, later we published an entire collection by Afghan women poets in The Candyman’s Trumpet.

Marwa was published earlier this year in The Dreaming Machine, a magazine based in Italy. I had curated a small collection of poems by Afghan women poets for them earlier this year, and am working on another one for their winter issue.

I’m honestly thrilled and so grateful to the many editors who have helped in getting the written work of Afghan women and girls to readers around the globe.
As I always say - it takes all of us to do this together, and I’m so grateful for the support.

Marwa is a student of @sahareducation , a fantastic organization to support if you want to help with girls’ education in Afghanistan.

You can help women in afghanistan by donating to charities that educate digitaly and discreetly, help people get the meals they need and bring awareness to the human rights that are being stripped away from some.

A woman, just like me.
Only she doesn’t have the freedoms that I have.
Making this small animation was actually very emotional for me.
My aim was to show the person underneath the burka, even though you can’t see her at all.
I often think about how, because women are so completely covered, we can forget that there is a person underneath that burka. A woman with her own personality, dreams, ambitions, opinions, fears and hopes.
Under Taliban rule, Afghan women and girls have had many of their fundamental freedoms and rights taken away. Girls are prohibited from attending secondary school and women are banned from universities. Women face severe restrictions on employment and are excluded from many areas of public life. Their freedom of movement is also heavily restricted, and strict rules govern how women can appear and behave in public.
These restrictions affect almost every part of their lives, education, work, movement, healthcare, expression and their ability to participate in society.
It is easy to take our own freedoms for granted when we have never had to imagine life without them.

The surge of child marriage has risen after the Taliban regained their power. 70% girls were forced into marriages, with 66% of them were minors. Not only laws, but Poverty, lack of education play the major roles into it as well.

Poor families had to sell their daughters/ married them off to survive. While girls can't access to education had no choice except marriage.

This is not life.
This is oppression,
driven through poverty, power, extreme control.
