HARRISBURG, Pa. — Gov. Josh Shapiro was not in a conciliatory mood.

“We have a long history in Pennsylvania of industry running roughshod over our communities to make a buck,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said in a speech, his voice rising with anger. “That stops with me.”

It was Aug. 18, and he was holding an executive order he was about to sign that would limit data center development. The governor, who is up for reelection in November, said speculative proposals to build data centers had swamped Pennsylvania. He said many of the projects were “led by developers who have no regard for local communities.”

He called them “predatory” developers. Then he made it personal: “We will not be bullied by developers and bulldozed by the lawyers working for these Big Tech companies.”

“Today, I’m formally putting them on notice.”

More than a year earlier, Shapiro, a potential 2028 presidential candidate who had made Kamala Harris’s shortlist to be her running mate, felt much differently.

Aaron Rodgers’s way into conversations is not authority. It is admission.

“I think a true big brother, a mentor, whatever it might be, is someone who can first admit that it’s okay to make mistakes — because I’ve made the same mistakes,” Rodgers said.

Aaron Rodgers does not talk about retirement merely as someone arranging a business portfolio. He talks about it as someone preparing for a different form of responsibility.

Both of Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor’s predecessors focused more on ideology than governing, both struggling with their far-left flank.

Despite the hurdles he faces, @CoreyOConnorPA is cheerful, always nodding his head and smiling, whether he is on local TV news or out in the community. At Big Jim’s, handshakes, backslaps and hugs greeted him as he made his way to a table in the back.

The new mayor has an opportunity to showcase Pittsburgh’s charm, grit, hospitality and affordability, which consistently have put it on the list of top cities in America to live.
