✨ ARTIST / WITHIN ✨

A storytelling series that captures intimate conversations and portraits of the artists around me — revealing the delicate balance they hold between daily routines and their pursuit of passion. Within their creative studios or spaces, I get to glimpse the inner workings of their colorful worlds, sharing both their artistic process and their heartfelt purpose.

My first conversation is with Sali — a singer, songwriter, and producer whose presence feels light, ethereal, almost fairy-like. Sitting in her cozy Bed-Stuy apartment, surrounded by plants, Polaroids, and relics from her travels, it became clear that her artistry isn’t just in her music but more powerfully, in the way she lives.

Here’s what this conversation showed me about how Sali is an artist in her own way:

✨ She treats creativity like a faucet — opening herself up to receive when the moment calls, letting songs emerge from the daily rhythms in her life.

✨ For her, performance is the heartbeat of her work where her art is live, present, and with people. That’s where she feels her music best comes alive.

✨ She weaves all her creative mediums together — photography, travel, music — because naturally, each one is in conversation with the other.

✨ She believes sharing is part of her artistic process. A song gets better once it’s witnessed, shaped by the feedback and energy of others.

✨ And perhaps most of all, she reminds us that “artist” is the timeless thing we can call ourselves, beyond labels and beyond categories.

2016 are you kidding me!!

- graduated high school (re prom pics)
- moved to Boston
- joined an acapella group: @buinachord
- maintained and began friendships for life <3
- consumed my first alcoholic beverage at @tylercotner 21st birthday party and was immediately messy

And thankfully befriended a professional photographer so there are some decent photos to look back on 🤓 @rachelleinerphoto xoxo

Gotta know the team’s values and it helps when they’re your friends and comrades!

Also an aside…wild that when I shot this I hadn’t watched #livingsingle yet. @erikaalexanderthegreat shaped some choices before I even knew it!

Stream @28tvshow on YouTube! And learn more in the #MarlaLouniverse xox
