Hello Coaches / Technical Officials (National-level or higher) & Club Presidents I’m Ray Harkness, candidate for USAW Grassroots Director and Coach/Technical Director.

Your ballot is headed to your email on Monday, Oct. 19. I’ve gotten to know many of you at events over the years, and I’d greatly appreciate your vote.

12 years; many roles: Athlete (Adaptive), Technical Official, Coach, Meet Director, Adaptive Athlete Task Force, Technical Support domestically & abroad, and WSO Committee Member / President.

The board sets strategy, protects our finances, and holds leadership accountable so the people doing the work can succeed.

Hiya, lifting friends!! 👋

13 years, 5 hats: athlete, technical official, meet director, comp secretary, and board member. The big lesson from all of it? This sport runs on service, teamwork, and integrity, and that’s what I bring to the USAW BOD.

Since 2023 as At-Large Director, I’ve been extremely active in our governance, working as liaison to the Technical Commission and Foundation Board, serving on the Adaptive and Gender Policy Task Forces, and now in the role of Vice Chair. I’ve pushed for a better grievance process and for more direct communication with all of you. I’m a problem-solver at heart, and I’ll happily jump into a tough debate when our sport needs it.

What’s next? Keeping USAW moving forward with purpose and unity. This sport is about community, and our governance should feel that way, too. 💙

Not too long before I met @killer__junior I decided to actually allow myself to be loved. It made me ready for a love like this and it also made me more able to truly receive it from my family and friends. I have never felt so whole, so myself, as I do now. Looking through the pictures from our wedding I can feel the love surrounding us, and it’s so touching and beautiful to know we have such incredible people in our lives that we get to share these types of moments with. We are so lucky! Thank you to everyone who made this amazing day possible (shout out to David et al. on dog duty, Olive’s team of disposable camera photographers, the moms, Magnet for literally everything, etc.) and to Matteo for just being Home to me in every way. Romance is very much alive and love is all we have in this god forsaken hell hole!!! I love you all!!! Thank you for being in our lives!!!

Some people change your career. Some people change your life. Mike does both.

Through 3 surgeries in 2.5 years, when everything could’ve gone a different direction, he didn’t just coach me, he showed up. When other coaches told me to come back when I was “better,” he told me to show up even more. He made the doctor appointments I couldn’t make, helped me get answers when no one else was connecting the dots, and pushed me to advocate for my health. That path led to my first autoimmune diagnosis, and ultimately uncovered two more that finally explained what I was dealing with.

At my lowest point, when everything was centered around getting back to a platform, he encouraged me to stop focusing on being an athlete, but to focus on being a human who doesn’t deserve to live in pain.

That changed everything.

Mike’s the kind of mentor this industry needs more of, especially for women. Someone who creates space, who listens, who never questions your knowledge or your worth, and who opens doors instead of guarding them.

He’s a huge reason I have the team I have, and why I get to show up and do this work every single day.

Friends and Family of the gym, we are starting a fundraiser TONIGHT to help replace equipment. Our stuff is old and is wearing out (see that second picture for a few examples)! Why are we running a fundraiser? Because the way we serve the community causes us to supplement about $3,000 aper month is helping students pay for memberships, athlete travel, etc. Please use the link in the bio to donate!
