🚨🚨 NEW FP TOTE NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER 🚨🚨 Support your favorite feminist publisher + look cool as hell while doing it! Pre-orders open until Sunday, October 11 or while supplies last.

This tote is inspired by Tereska Torres’s WOMEN’S BARRACKS—credited as the first candidly lesbian novel—which we reissued in the early 2000s as part of our Femmes Fatales series. Torres’s novel was denounced by the House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials in 1952 as an example of how the paperback industry was “promoting moral degeneracy.” In spite of such efforts the novel became a record-breaking bestseller and inspired a whole new genre: lesbian pulp.

Books like WOMEN’S BARRACKS offered subversive perspectives on a turbulent era, which we find to be extremely relevant today. We understand the experience of amplifying voices on the margins in the face of adversity, especially from the government. In 2025, our National Endowment for the Arts funding was terminated by the Trump Administration. That meant we we lost critical funding that was budgeted to support debut authors and works in translation.

Whether it’s trolls on the internet who want us to make them a sandwich (seriously) or people who question why a “feminist” press needs to exist in 2026, we’re constantly faced with people who object to the work that we do. So we’re leaning into it! If “moral degeneracy” means creating books that depict the world we live in, we’re here for it. We see this tote as both a clap back and a call to arms 😈.

Welcome to our August/September creative resident, @salpal.c / Sally Chen!

Sally Chen (they/she/he) is a queer, nonbinary, 2nd-generation Chinese American illustrator, muralist, and poet born & based in NYC. Their work explores the quiet intimacies that occur in daily life. They utilize free-flowing lines, vibrant colors, glowing silhouettes, bits of verse, and portraiture to capture the many fleeting moments of joy and sorrow that keep us yearning for another day, and consequently, a brighter future. They illustrated the children's book "A Song For Nolan", written by Rushie Ellenwood, led one of the murals on the 31st Avenue Open Streets (the mural with the animals right in front of Fresh One Deli), and are a current Create Change Fellow under the Laundromat Project.

We'll have Sally's work on display through September -- please come and see their prints, stickers, and zines!

Now available for pre-order! GAME IS HER MIDDLE NAME: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF BETTY DAVIS by Danielle Maggio ✨️ on shelves February 9, 2027! The first full biography of the funk pioneer cited as an inspiration by artists from Beyoncé to Questlove.

As a girl, Betty Davis fixed her eyes on stardom and never looked back. After leaving a violent marriage to her husband Miles Davis, Betty took unprecedented control of her musical career for a Black woman working in the 1970s, performing and producing a string of defiantly feminist funk records with a screaming, sexually intense style like no one else. And then, at the crest of her powers, she fell silent.

Built on decades of interviews and told through the eyes of Danielle Maggio, Davis’s close friend in her final years, GAME IS HER MIDDLE NAME reveals new aspects of Davis’s life, music, and struggles. In telling her story, Maggio gives us a nuanced portrait of what happens to a pathbreaking artist when the spotlight moves on from her, and what happens when the world finally catches up.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Danielle Maggio is a writer, professor, and vinyl DJ based in Pittsburgh, PA. She received her PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh and is currently an adjunct professor at Duquesne University and University of Pittsburgh where she teaches courses on world music and global pop. She is the liner notes author for Light in the Attic’s 2023 rereleases of Betty Davis’s albums Betty Davis, They Say I’m Different, and Crashin’ from Passion.
