ACCA is so pleased to welcome @salpal.c to our team!

Sally Chen is a queer, nonbinary, 2nd-generation Chinese American illustrator, muralist, and poet born & based in NYC. Sally is the illustrator of A Song For Nolan (2024), and they have a BFA from Parsons School of Design. Through their work, they explore the quiet intimacies that occur in daily life. They utilize free-flowing lines, vibrant colors, glowing silhouettes, bits of verse, and portraiture to capture the many fleeting moments of joy and sorrow that keep us yearning for another day, and consequently, a brighter future. Sally is drawn to heartwarming stories about heritage, home, family, friends, and social justice. They're also a huge fan of folktales, stories rooted in history or science, and LOVE fantasy (they play D&D weekly)! by @salpal.c

Globlord is a part of the @writeclubnyc this weekend! It is chock full of video game jargon that director @alexhad
and choregrapher @margo_e0 turned into a dance. Like if Club Penguin held a rave but instead of dancing we are performing complex dodge patterns and everyone hates each other and loves each other and is dressed in pajamas and we are all having a really difficult time making male friendships because everyone keeps
speaking
to
each
other
like
birds
and saying the R word but it’s normal for gamers, right? Am I being catfished?

I wrote this play based off found dialogue from raging gamers for an @alexhad bake-off, and am so awe-inspired by what this team has done with it that I reinstalled this app for the weekend. Pls send me cat reel. Ticket link in bio 🎟️. -Jason

Welcome to our August/September creative resident, @salpal.c / Sally Chen!

Sally Chen (they/she/he) is a queer, nonbinary, 2nd-generation Chinese American illustrator, muralist, and poet born & based in NYC. Their work explores the quiet intimacies that occur in daily life. They utilize free-flowing lines, vibrant colors, glowing silhouettes, bits of verse, and portraiture to capture the many fleeting moments of joy and sorrow that keep us yearning for another day, and consequently, a brighter future. They illustrated the children's book "A Song For Nolan", written by Rushie Ellenwood, led one of the murals on the 31st Avenue Open Streets (the mural with the animals right in front of Fresh One Deli), and are a current Create Change Fellow under the Laundromat Project.

We'll have Sally's work on display through September -- please come and see their prints, stickers, and zines! by @salpal.c

Happy #kidlitartpostcard day! 🐋🐳 My name is Sally Chen and I’m a queer, nonbinary, 2nd gen Chinese American illustrator born and raised in NYC. 🗽✨

I’m a published kidlit illustrator that worked with @littlebeebooks and @glaad to create A Song For Nolan, a book about a nonbinary kid who advocates for themself, written by Rushie Ellenwood (@fuzzymullet) and released in June 2024. 🪩🛼

I’m looking to write and illustrate picture books (and poetry + graphic novels).

As an illustrator, I’d love to work on picture books, middle grade, graphic novels, YA, activity books, and poetry. 🖼️

I’m drawn to heartwarming stories about heritage, home, family, friends, and social justice. I’m also a huge fan of folktales, stories rooted in history or science, and LOVE fantasy (I play D&D weekly)!

I’m represented by Andrea Colvin from @acolvincreative ⭐️🐳

so grateful to say that my art was in the “Pride in Community” exhibit at J.J. Byrne Playground hosted by @artsgowanus + @oldstonehousebklyn + Brooklyn Pride (for the 3rd year in a row)!! 🥳🥳

it made me so happy to see all the queer and trans art in such a lovely public park for all ages to enjoy, thank you to @artsgowanus for making it all possible! 🥰🌈

a poem zine i wrote about burn scars, the women in my life, and starting over. 🕯️❤️‍🔥🫂

i’ve been sitting with this thought since i burned my hand for the first time while visiting Oregon last year (while trying to flip something in the oven).

after the initial shock / pain, i couldn’t stop staring at my hands because i was struck by how they looked so familiar.

then i shared that thought with one of my besties and they said “god i hate artists” LOLLL

these zines are available in my online sh0p (🔗 in bi0) & in person at:

📌 8/01 (Sat) @astoriatranscollective on @31staveopenstreet (1 PM - 6 PM)🪴

📌 8/15 (Sat) & 8/16 (Sun) at @flamecon booth B-20 from (12 PM - 8 PM & 12 PM - 6 PM) ⭐
