Make your own path with this recommendation from Elliott of SLC Mutual Aid and our very own Scream Queers book club! Get ready to devour Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova

“Monstrilio is a queer exploration of what it’s like to feel ‘other' and have to create your own path (like eating people)”

Reminder: buying any book from this shelf for the rest of June helps support SLCMA! SLCMA works to build resilient community in the Salt Lake Valley. They operate based on consensus and a horizontal (non-hierarchical) structure with no paid staff. Currently their efforts focus on unhoused community distro, really really free markets, free community fridges, and hosting community events.

The shelf includes:
🏳️‍⚧️ Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
🔥 All This Could Be Different by Sarah Thankam Mathews
🏳️‍🌈 Heartstopper vol 1 by Alice Oseman

MEATY MONDAY
🥩
this is an incredibly chaotic way to pull together six books, but hey— it was fun too, so i think it’s worth it! i’ve really been in my “cannibal / body horror fiction” era lately because i FINALLY started watching Hannibal for the very first time, and i just happened to receive a book that absolutely fits the vibes! so if you’re looking for intense gore + body horror + cannibalist introspection, look no further! i highly recommend watching two absolute classics: Hannibal and Yellowjackets! they’re basically the holy bible of this genre when it comes to television shows, and i think all of these books have cemented their place in the ranks too!

GORE POETICS by Samir Sirk Morató (out 4/14/26) is a collection of short stories, paired with stunning art cover pages, full of erotic and explosive horror. i don’t often need to take breaks from extreme horror, and i didn’t really need to take breaks BECAUSE of how extreme it was, but actually because of how visceral some of the emotions were in the short-form setting! i saw another reviewer describe the art pieces as an almost zine-like intro to each story, and i 100% agree. the works in this collection are subversive, suggestive, and at times incredibly suggestive— while also diving deep into some of the darkest places i can imagine! (it’s not all cannibalism i promise— it’s actually barely cannibalism at all, but the cover really fits) what’s more queer than tragedy and the unwavering desire to TRUST? idk, but i absolutely love it

QUEER HORROR IS BEST HORROR CONFIRMED!!!! 😤

As much as fantasy will always be a favorite genre, I was in the biggest fantasy reading slump for most of the end of last year. Sometimes, I find that genre hopping can really snap me out of it and get me excited about reading again, so I decided to pick up some horror that had been on my TBR forever…

And now I’m OFFICIALLY in my horror era! I’ve been absolutely LOVING the queer horror I’ve been reading so far this year (seriously, nothing but 5 stars all around!) and these are some I’d classify as must-reads.

They definitely vary in tone, so whether you like more gentle horror or want something truly grues0me, there’s a read for you on this list!

Let me know if you’ve read any of these and share your favorite queer horror picks in the comments!
