A few shots from a wonderful trip to @landracemilling yesterday for a meeting of bakers from the @swgrainnetwork 🌾 At Westcombe, the team are working with a fantastic number of diverse, interesting varieties of heritage and modern grain, sourced directly from local farms and milled on site in their impressive @newamericanstonemills. It was beautiful to see each grain presented in both white and wholemeal forms, forming a bakers' palette of different colours, textures and qualities ready to be combined in ways that bring out the best results. Being part of the network provides us with an invaluable community of like-minded producers across the region, all working together to build a better, fairer food system that benefits people and the land. For us, the network is a source of inspiration and knowledge that helps us to stay true to our vision for the bakery and connects us to the wider importance of making good food on a small scale. A big thanks to @lukedoesbread for guiding us and being generous with his knowledge, as ever, and @tuesday_tuesday for coordinating the day with joy and humour. The True South West flour we use in the bakery - and therefore the loaves our customers are enjoy - contributes to a levy that funds the network and pays Robyn's wages to coordinate these activities (which is no mean feat: organising bakers is like herding cats!). Later in the year, we're hoping those cats/bakers will be herded to Plymouth, so stay tuned to see what we get up to next!

Say hello to our beautiful new logo!!! 👋🏼🤩 When we were finalising our big move to @32batterstreet we decided we wanted to refresh our look to better reflect how the bakery has evolved over the past five years of baking adventures. We knew we wanted something bolder, more fun, vibrant, welcoming. We wanted something that shows what's key to what we do: everything at Heyl is handmade and rooted in the idea that small is beautiful because of the relationships and connection that comes with it. 💛 So who better to design our logo than the fantastically talented, brilliantly joyful and all altogether wonderful (not to mention local) @suelewry! Sue's printmaking, murals and collages really spoke to what we wanted to achieve, so we were thrilled when she not only accepted the commission but invited us into her home studio to collaborate on the project. Together we explored "mark making" through a variety of mediums based on the motions of the process of making bread. The finished logo combines one of these marks made in charcoal by Sam replicating the motion of shaping a round loaf. Sue combined this with gorgeous shapes and colours that are distinctive of her work, as well as paper-cut font for that handmade feel. A special shout out, too, to @bracken.design who worked with Sue to expertly digitise the textural elements of the finished proofs. And also to Andy @wall.2.wall.graphics for the popping decal on the bakery door. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 We're absolutely in love with the finished logo and we hope you like it too! LAST CHRISTMAS...🌲👇🏼 Hey folks - we've got some big bakery news to share with you. After three wonderful years at Alma Yard, we’re packing up our flour-dusted shelves... and moving to a beautiful new home! 🤩 Many of you will know that we've been supplying @jarplymouth with our bakes since day dot of the bakery, but they have recently moved the refill shop upstairs, leaving a very handy bakery-sized space downstairs 😉 We are thrilled to announce that in the new year we'll be moving into 32 Batter Street! This means you'll be able to grab a loaf, refill your larder goods and grab a coffee at @almanac.cafe.plymouth all in one trip ☕🌱 We'll be open as usual at Alma for the run up to Christmas - including the Christmas Lates event this Thursday. But we are very excited for this next step in our bakery journey and look forward to welcoming you all to the new bakery in 2026! Oven roasted wild garlic and sesame seed Fougasse made with overnight bulked levain baguette dough. 10% wild roasted garlic.. ... and 5% oven roasted sesame. Flippin' eck this tastes sooooo good. We roasted the wild garlic to deactivate the alliianase enzyme in garlic, which totally screws with the gluten

A sleepy @samcdennis this morning baking off the loaf we mixed during our wonderful bread class yesterday. Listen out for the satisfying "knock test" at the end! ✨28.09.2024 ✨ Kate and I got hitched in a hella ugly postwar monstrosity of a building in the middle of Plymouth and became civil partners for life - and we did it all in our own joyful way ❤️ There are more people that I would have loved to have shared the day with, but we kept it very small and DIY and it was perfectly imperfectly perfect. So many wonderful moments to choose from and too many thanks to give. My heart is full and I'm beyond grateful for our incredible family and beautiful friends. Most of all, I'm bursting with love and pride and pure bloody happiness to be able to call @katelangston my partner and to spend our lives together. I love you, KatyK 💕 📸 Photos: Everyone! First camping trip of the summer! Our BBQing abilities may still leave a lot to be desired (turns out it helps if you put enough charcoal on, to start...) but nevertheless had an idyllic evening with @samcdennis at South Devon Camping, followed by a sunny afternoon on the beach at Thurlstone.
