𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘩 explores light’s capacity to shape atmosphere and elicit nostalgia through photography, video installation, painting, and sculpture.

From the soft glow of a lamp to the electric pulse of neon-lit storefronts, light dissolves the boundaries between public and private, interior and exterior, sober reality and dreamlike states. It attracts and warns like the neon districts of desire, beckons customers through storefront signs, and holds the charged aesthetics of adult nightlife and the electrifying transitional spaces of adolescent venues and all-ages places of play - from nostalgia-laden arcades and laser tag arenas to cosmic bowl and roller rinks. The lights associated with nightlife evoke distinct visual and auditory environments of spectacle and stimulation. Black light, neon, glowing carpets, mirrored disco balls and colored lights create a heightened atmosphere that carries a sense of escapism and intoxication.

As my time at SAIC begins to end, I want to think about one of the best moments I’ve had to have. Being able to take pictures of so many amazing artists is such a beautiful experience. I’ve been able to connect and document such amazing talented people. I was looking through this archive I’ve created with so many different art styles and techniques and influences and it made me feel so proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish. I’ll be able to look at this archive with more than 100 different artists and just sit back in awe. And it’s still expanding! What a life! There’s so many other immensely talented people I could’ve posted, what a problem to have, too many beautiful photos!!
I’m still adding to this archive! I’m still working with artists! And I hope to do that forever. Let me know if you want to be included :)

"It Will Destroy You" is now on view through April 19. Curated by Isaiah Lee and Samiah Fulcher, this powerful group exhibition brings together 23 artists working across painting, sculpture, installation, and video, exploring self-preservation, reconciliation, and what it means to survive a crumbling world.

This is our third year having a single, unified group of visual artists and curators. Sixteen Artist and five Curatorial Residents have been arranged into exhibition pods of four and five individuals. Together, in the second year of their residency, they will develop their group exhibitions.

The placement of artists and curators together to build an exhibition from start to finish with our guidance is unique to the CAC residency. An emphasis on professional development is another cornerstone of our program, where we connect our artists and curators with people and skills that can help them sustainably live, work, and thrive in Chicago.

We have long been an early indicator of artists to watch, and this group is no exception!

This show, curated by the incredible @samiahfulcher and @isaiahleeart, was built from the ground up by Chicago artists asking hard questions about the world we're living in right now and imagining what might come next.

We are thrilled to highlight an exceptional season of institutional recognition for César López.

Following his recent inclusion in the curatorial selection at Salon Acme in Mexico City, César’s work is currently stepping into museum spaces across the Midwest:

• Opening March 6: The World in Kansas City at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.

• Opening Feb 27: A Scattering of Jades at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.

• On View: It Will Destroy You at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago.

We invite you to visit these institutions and experience these works in person.

This exhibition brings together 23 contemporary artists whose works interrogate the deconstruction of systems and structures that have long governed our lives. Through painting, sculpture, installation, and video, the show reflects on themes of self-preservation and reconciliation as we navigate what curators Isaiah Lee and Samiah Fulcher describe as a "crumbling socio-political landscape built on violence, greed, corruption, and brutality."

In a climate of uncertainty and upheaval, "It Will Destroy You" challenges us to consider alternative visions of co-existence that possess the strength to outlive any empire. The works presented spark critical conversation about not only our current moment but the future we can create together.
