Snippets of the recent clean up and waste audit along Suva Point - My Suva Park on Saturday 6th June 2026

We are thankful for the volunteers, for the MECC staff that helped load/unload the sacks of litter, the skip-bin company, the beautiful weather, the @sustainablecoastlines trainers, all the concerned citizens and organizations that joined in the clean up, the outrigger paddlers that cleaned the USP foreshore, the drivers that were going back and forth to pick teams and gear, the SCC workers at My Suva Park, and all other partners and champions that work at the grassroots, forefront, and behind the scenes to deal with this multifaceted issue of pollution

General litter removed: 440kg
Audited Waste: 78kg

This is the team work we all need to clean up Fiji

Thank you so much @samjuddnz for inviting me to join the Sustainable Coastlines cleanup up crew on Matiu/Somes Island yesterday as part of the massive multi-site Lower Hutt cleanup day. @briony.millar and I had a fantastic adventure for good - rock hopping, scrambling over cliffs, crawling through the very scratchy scrub, with the accompanying cacophony of gulls, penguins in the sea and in burrows, and slithering skinks. A really interesting mix of rubbish and thankfully maybe a little less than expected, and most of all a fantastic group of volunteers from local Iwi to @spiritofadventurenz crew. Such a huge operation with divers in the water, barges and boats and hundreds of volunteers across many sites, but seamlessly run. Well done Sam!

So much for Plastic Free July with our latest survey from Kāpiti Island. 97% of the litter we found was plastic! 😢At 596 pieces per 1,000m2, we also found much more than the national average of 292.

Some ‘highlights’ include:
🔫 20 shotgun waddings
🔴77 bottle caps and lids
🧤266 unidentifiable hard plastic fragments (yes we count them all).
🍶Just one ceramic fragment (glass and ceramic fragments are usually our second most common litter find).

We also found a surf hat (sadly not usable), a bottle of rum (with some still in it — yarr), and a ‘mini enema’ (for which our sanitary item handling procedure came into full force).

Where’s this stuff coming from? Not Kāpiti itself, that’s for sure. Apart from what comes from boats (and pirate ships), most of it will be coming out of bins, off the street, and down through waterways on the mainland. When it reaches the ocean it ends up wherever the currents decide.

Let’s do better at protecting our special places like Kāpiti Island. Understanding the nature of the problem with litter audits like this one is part of it. As is working with locals and local councils like Kapiti Coast District Council to find solutions.

See the full survey data at the link in our bio.
