I’m still a little surprised that my very first documentary, Water Guardians, has been nominated for a New York Emmy® in Sports – Diversity & Inclusion.
It took me a while to share the news, but with the awards ceremony happening tomorrow, I’m finally letting myself take it in — and I’m really looking forward to celebrating. ❤️
More than anything, I’m grateful that this nomination gives a spotlight to the incredible community of children, parents, coaches, and volunteers who are creating opportunities for young people to connect with the water through free surf lessons.
A huge thank you to all of them for trusting me to document their stories — and especially to Mr. Lou of Black Surfing Rockaway, for welcoming me into his space and allowing me to be part of this community.
I also would never have reached this milestone without the support of BRIC Media and the wonderful team behind the film. In particular, I want to thank Steve Flack, an extraordinary editor and such a generous, community-minded human. His vision, patience, and talent helped shape this film in ways I’m deeply grateful for.
Whatever happens tomorrow, I’m incredibly proud that Water Guardians has brought attention to this community and to the importance of making the water accessible to everyone.
