Sometimes my role is simply to be present. 📖

While I sit nearby with my book, the children are completely immersed in their own play — choosing what they want to do, following their ideas, solving their own little problems and moving between experiences at their own pace.

I’m here when they need me. They can come over for help, conversation, comfort or to share something they’ve discovered, but otherwise, I give them the space to simply play.

This is such an important part of my approach to slow pedagogy. I don’t need to lead every experience or fill every moment. Sometimes stepping back, observing and trusting children to lead their own play is exactly what they need.

And while they play, I’m doing a little learning of my own. I picked up Fuelled Up Life by Sammi Jaeger at the conference I recently attended, and I’m finally getting a chance to sit down and read it. A little professional and personal reflection while still being present and available to the children feels like a pretty lovely way to spend the morning.

They know I’m here. They know I’m available. And they know their play belongs to them.

Day two of Dream Lead Play 2026 and my heart is still so full. 💛

Every speaker on Educators Day was chosen so intentionally, for exactly what they could add to a Family Day Care business.

The gorgeous Emma Rattenbury took us through programming and documentation, and how to reframe it into something that actually works for you.

Nicole gave us the most incredible examples, videos and real scenarios on play, and how educators can deeply connect with children by letting them lead, rather than leading them.

Maree showed us how to tell families what they need to hear, in a way that stays true to your own values and strengths, so you attract families who are genuinely aligned with you, with a documented process to back it up.

And Sammi Jaeger reminded every single one of us how important it is to fuel your own tank first, and took us on that journey of rediscovering ourselves.

Each speaker touched on something unique, and it spoke so beautifully to every educator in that room.

Honestly, the energy was electric. Watching people who'd only ever known each other online finally meet and connect in person was one of my favourite parts of the whole day. And don't even get me started on the food. Absolutely outstanding.

Here's a little glimpse of how day two went!

What a DAY. 💗✨

My head is full, my heart is fuller, and I have so much I want to unpack from today.

Today wasn’t just about sitting in a room listening to incredible speakers. It was about learning, connection, community and being reminded why we do this work in the first place.

We heard from the incredible Victoria Edmound, Nicole Houlton from Inspired EC, Sammi Jaeger, Maree Kirkpatrick and Emma Rattenbury… each bringing something completely different to the room and leaving me with plenty to think about.

There were moments that challenged my thinking.
Moments that sparked new ideas.
Moments that made me scribble notes furiously. 😂
And moments where I just sat there thinking, YES. This.

But possibly my favourite part?

Being surrounded by educators who get it.
The conversations between sessions.
The laughter.
The sharing.
The encouragement.
The feeling of being part of a community of people who care deeply about children, education and doing this work well.

I’ll give you a much better recap once the weekend is over and I’ve had time to process it all…… because there is A LOT to unpack. 🤯

For tonight though…

I’m feeling inspired, connected, grateful and very lucky to be here.

One more day to go. 💕✨

Day one of Dream Lead Play 2026 was every bit as incredible as I hoped it would be. 🌟
We had four absolutely wonderful speakers share their stories with our Leaders Day group, and every single one of them was so relevant to service providers and leaders in Family Day Care.

Because it was such an intimate group, so much was shared that probably wouldn't have come out in a bigger, more anonymous room. The honesty in that room was next level.

Everyone who attended walked away with incredible takeaways, but more than that, they walked away as friends. As colleagues. As people they can now call on when things get tough, so they never have to feel alone in this profession again.

Here's just a little snippet of how day one went!

I really hope you'll put next year in your calendar. Dream Lead Play 2027 is happening in the first week of June 2027, and I cannot wait to see you there.

In this episode, Kevin Bees sits down with Sammi Jaeger @sammisomewhere to talk about her new book, A Fuelled Up Life — unpacking burnout, boundaries, and how to define success without sacrificing your well-being.

Key highlights:
✅ Success isn’t success if it costs your well-being — define your own “Fuelled Up Life” across 8 life areas.
✅ Burnout often comes from over-investing in one area while neglecting the rest.
✅ Boundaries are a learnable skill, starting with: “That doesn’t work for me.”
✅ The FUEL framework helps turn reactive choices into intentional decisions.
✅ Self-relationship matters: self-kindness, ownership, and self-worth beyond your role.
✅ Collaboration over competition through shared introductions and aligned partnerships.

A powerful reminder that sustainable success comes from alignment, not hustle and that protecting your energy is one of the smartest business decisions you can make.
