🍷 A wonderful evening in Montclair, with a little piece of Napa Valley at the table.

Last night we enjoyed an exceptional dinner at @samstablenj, an intimate restaurant where Chef Sam Stymest celebrates seasonal ingredients through a thoughtful, ever-changing tasting menu.

Every course was beautifully prepared, from the rich, savory dashi to the trout, celery root, and teres major. Each dish brought something different to the table, with wonderful flavors, textures, and attention to detail.

And because Sam’s Table welcomes BYOB, we had the perfect opportunity to open a bottle we’d been saving for a special evening. 🍇

Our 2012 M5 Cabernet Sauvignon from @kruppbrothers had been resting in our cellar since one of our first trips to Napa Valley. After all these years, it was aging beautifully and made the evening even more memorable.

There’s something special about opening a bottle that brings back memories of a destination you loved exploring.

One of the things I appreciate most about travel is discovering exceptional food and wine experiences, whether they’re close to home or across the country.

Montclair has a wonderful culinary scene worth exploring, and Napa Valley continues to be one of my favorite destinations for wine lovers.

#WhatImEating: @samstablenj. My wife and I first discovered @chefstymest during COVID, when he was hosting pop-up dinners in his parents’ home. It’s been wonderful watching that journey lead to Sam’s Table, where Sam and his irreverent mom, Deborah, have created a warm, welcoming place that somehow still feels like you’re eating in their home, right down to the artwork of Sam’s dad, Brian, an accomplished artist in his own right, which adorns the walls of the restaurant. 🖼️

In a town filled with incredible culinary options, Sam is producing some of Montclair’s most creative and bold dishes, with a menu that changes monthly to showcase what’s in season. 🍽️

🎉 Happy first anniversary to Sam’s Table, and congratulations to the entire Stymest family on the special place they’ve created. 🥂

On Sunday, Edible Jersey attended a seven-course tasting dinner to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Sam’s Table in Montclair, NJ!

We indulged in incredible dishes with a mushroom focus (thanks to Dan Lipow of @theforagedfeast), including rabbit with fermented mushroom duxelles, skate with chanterelles and a brown butter beurre blanc, and even porcini ice cream. It was such a wonderful meal to celebrate good people!

Operating a restaurant these days is no easy feat—cheers to one year, Sam and Deborah, and to many more!

I enjoyed an excellent foraged mushroom dinner @samstablenj celebrating their first anniversary. Thank you Chefs Sam, Josh, Deborah, and Dan for your beautifully foraged mushrooms🙏 I enjoyed Heirloom grits with Hen of the woods; #rabbit saddle with fermented mushroom duxelles, bacon, squash puree, and roasted apple; #skate with chanterelles, spice berry, and brown butter (delicious but full of bones); chicken of the woods with sunflower, koji, and sorrel; dashi with shiitake and lemon verbena; Autumn olive with caramelized oat and toasted meringue; fantastic porcini ice cream with walnut spice cake and candy cap caramel. It went great with an excellent Malbec and Bourgogne shared with my fellow diner. #mushroom #redwinelover #dessert

Current state of mind: Every dish at Sam’s Table was plated like a work of art. 🎨

The four-course prix fixe was incredible, and the supplemental add-ons are an absolute must✨
