Welcome to Utopia.
People write poetry about places like this. They’ll write about us someday. Maybe they already have. Maybe I’m the one writing—I’m not sure.
Nostalgia is a liar, but this is what I do know: The sun never really shines here, so we don rose-colored glasses and bask in our sadness instead. Revel in it. Hold it like a knife. Defend our honor in size twelve helvetica. Patch up our wounds or ignore the bleeding. Imagine, for a moment, that everything is beautiful.
This is the sleepy city you were raised in. This is the sparkling party you watch from the corner. This is the impenetrable persona you crafted to protect yourself. This is a sad chapter in a tragic fairytale. This is life and love and loss.
You can turn your pain into poetry, you can wrap your heartache in a pretty bow, and you can pretend to be someone you aren’t, but you can’t outrun the truth.
This is what you asked for. Do you want it now?
