4 years of 𝙄𝙣 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙎𝙤𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜. In the depths of Covid, I made a solo piano record. I had no expectations, I just made the thing. And somehow, this little piano record continues to reverberate in surprising, beautiful ways. I could have never imagined this record would resonate the way it has. Thank you for continuing to listen and giving this music so much life 😭 Importantly, there are no words to express the depths of gratitude I feel towards @samtorresnoise for helping me make this record at a time when I didn’t believe in my own voice… may we all find those people who believe in us so unequivocally ❤️‍🩹 BTS pics from the alley video shoot by @kikivassilakis

One of my greatest joys is getting to live life in the weeds with @samtorresnoise We’ve spent the last few days at @studio9porches learning the space and its amazing technical, spatial capabilities. When there are so many possibilities, it starts to force the question, “why”. What decisions serve the music and the experience as a whole, and what ends up being a distraction? Or a gimmick? It’s been fun exploring that question a bit this week, and we’re excited to share! Thank you @digifiddler for inviting us and @freshgrassfoundation for the support and time/space. Music at 7pm tonight (Saturday) at @studio9porches 💫💫💫

Sophia Vastek (@sophiavastek ) and Sam Torres (@samtorresnoise ) moved into Studio 9 and the porches on Wednesday morning for their Freshgrass Residency. Since then, they’ve been creating, playin#freshgrassinstitute #spatialaudio #g, and working together to build a new sound world for Sophia’s music, centering on her new record, Alight. SpaceMap Go, the software you see on screen, allows instantaneous placement and movement of sound in and through space, and in fact, we welcomed its creator, @steve.ellison3 only two weeks ago. It seems like every artist who visits us has @eventideaudio at the center of their rig, and that is the lovely glow and shimmer that you hear. Sam Torres, sound designer, live audio engineer, and composer in his own right, took command of our @meyersound SpaceMap system for the very first time with ease and grace, and Sophia’s keyboards and compositions quickly reached into the 3D realm. Join us to hear it live Saturday night! Studio 9 231 River Street North Adams, MA 7pm $25 at the door @freshgrassfoundation @studio9porches

It Feels So Good to Drive Away From Your Life (2001) Christopher and I once drove to Atlanta in a rental truck. We were bringing some paintings of ours (mine strapped to the right, his to the left, if I remember correctly) to my college friend Seth. I’ll forever be thankful. Seth was trying his luck at becoming our agent. He was angling for some sales … and perhaps he could help boost our early careers. Needless to say, it didn’t turn out as we’d all hoped. But while we were driving, Christopher and I passed a boombox back and forth. This is our sonic diary. Sort of a field recording - or perhaps a comedy record - it’s a beautiful document of our friendship, and the rawest proof of his improvisational chops. You hardly hear me, but that’s fine, it’s loaded with laughs. The lowest-fi recording we made. The atmospheric grime adds to the charm. I’m actually surprised how little highway I hear. I edited down the two sides of a full 90 minute cassette into two long tracks: A side 30:06 / B side 31:36. There are two brief moments from my apartment demo tapes (you’ll hear my bass in one of them) on the A side. There are also lots of abrupt snippets of our band in full rock mode between passages since the boombox wasn’t all that great at erasing what was already on the tape. I love that layering. Mastered - with great subtlety - by Sam Torres at Polymouth. Now on Bandcamp. There’s a link in my profile. Enjoy ✨

“April 20” live at @theeggpac 9.25 April 20 is my birthday and I’ve always felt a heavy melancholy around that day. I go into a pretty weird/dark place most years 🫣 That said, I adore this song. I love how it came out on the new record, and this solo arrangement has turned into one of my favorites to play live! I’ll be performing a spatialized version of it this Saturday 10.17 at @studio9porches ✨ Engineered live by @samtorresnoise

I’m thrilled to be spending a few days this week in residency at @studio9porches in North Adams, MA alongside @samtorresnoise ! Sam and I will be spending our time there getting to know the @meyersoundlabs Spacemap spatial sound technology and will design an immersive show specifically for this system. Piano, everywhere! Sam and I have been collaborating for years now in developing my live sound. He is 100% the secret sauce. Sam mixes all my shows: he’s constantly tweaking things and making creative decisions about how we convey my music to audiences. He’s very much responsible for the feel of my live performances. This residency will highlight his incredible artistry as an engineer! If you’re in the area, we hope you’ll join us for this one-of-a-kind performance on Saturday, Oct. 17 ✨
