When the parts come together, you get to see why they’re shaped the way they are.
An edge follows its neighbor. A recess makes room for another piece. A connection that looked unusual on its own starts to make sense.
That’s one of my favorite moments in the process: seeing all those small decisions become a whole. After so much time spent zoomed in on individual details, you step back and watch them find their place.

Hugest congratulations to my excellent friend Caroline Walker on her powerful and poignant show “Birth Reflections” at Fitzrovia Chapel which opened last night. The exhibition is the result of a residency that Caroline did in the maternity wing of UCLH, the hospital where both she and I gave birth to our daughters. Even if not every image reminded me of my exact experience, they all represented scenarios that I’d considered or hoped for. The central painting, depicting a caesarean is a particular knock out. All the people working away at their different jobs was not only extremely current but also echoes so many history paintings, either those by war artists or back to more classical paintings of biblical scenes.

It’s such a strong body of work and so exciting to see Caroline exhibit her paintings in such a powerful space. Site specific painting has always been my favourite kind of painting, so I really loved this.

It’s only on for a couple of weeks so go see it if you can!
