One new release this week and it's the second Guatemalan of the season and this one is from Eddy Macdonald Lopez Lopez and his farm La Gardenia in the Huehuetenango region. A naturally processed Marsellesa variety. A first for us. @primavera.coffee Just a few highlights from this week at the roastery in the images above. We've been making our final selections for the Twelve Days of Crankhouse advent box and one coffee in particular stood out. The first harvest from a farm named El Micelio, which gives a clue as to the approach the producers Laura and WIlliam have taken. Their focus is on the soil and in their words: "We don't grow coffee, we restore and maintain healthy soil, creating the conditions in which coffee and many other trees can grow." They've not grown any fancy 'new' varieties or used any modern sophisticated high intervention processing techniques but focused their energies on creating a healthy organism. The result is quite special. @laura_elsa_meunier @minga.coffee Our third year being invited to cup the 'SanCup' Best of SanCoffee auction coffees and as always a real treat. This year there were only 3 'naturals' and the remaining 12 were all labelled 'fermented'. I visited SanCoffee last year on my trip to Brazil and for me this year's coffees are a step above the previous two years. Some super fruity coffees from producers in the Campo das Vertentes region. @sancoffee.br This week @vadymgranovskiy brought his 'Turkish' brewing kit in with him, including two beautiful solid silver Ibrik brewers, so I asked him to brew us up some coffees. He wanted to try one of our super processed fruit forward coffees and we picked the Edinson Argote Orange Bourbon. Hand grinding in his special edition Comandante Barracuda was challenging (although he made it look easy). A super fine grind (way finer than espresso) and a small 7g dose per brewer. Put on low heat and watching it change colour and start to degas and bubble was quite mesmerising. Immediately poured into some beautiful handmade porcelain cups made for quite a special experience. The coffee tasted incredible.
