What happens when an artist’s practice becomes the starting point for a conversation that no one person controls? Our CBY Studio Visit with Audrone (Audra) Brazauskaite at Madh Island brought together different ways of thinking about art, making and reflection. A painter, performance artist and art therapist, Audra’s practice moves between intuitive expression, material processes and the therapeutic possibilities of art. The encounter reflected what CBY seeks to create: a space where seniority, academic position or professional experience does not determine whose voice carries more weight. A practicing artist and a final-year student can question, respond, disagree and contribute on equal terms. The later discussion around “Self-Reflection in Process” opened up questions that extended beyond Audra’s practice: What is the purpose of making art for oneself? At what point does external validation from the art industry begin to influence the work? What are the dilemmas of making art that takes a political stand? And how does an artist negotiate between personal conviction and the expectations of an external audience? As with every CBY visit, the conversation continued informally over food. We enjoyed a Lithuanian soup made with beetroot, leafy vegetables, potato and egg adding another layer of exchange to an afternoon shaped by art, questions and conversation. At CBY, the studio is not simply a place to present finished work. It becomes a space to question practice, encounter different perspectives and think together without assuming that experience automatically makes one person the authority.

12 studios. 12 practices. One growing community. Over the past year, Chala Bhetuya (CBY) has travelled across 12 artists’ studios in Navi Mumbai - meeting artists who sustain diverse and rigorous practices, often without institutional or gallery support, while balancing their work with family and community responsibilities. They are lesser-known artists, with conviction to art practice. CBY was created as a peer-learning platform - a neutral, accessible and intimate space to experience art, exchange ideas and engage with artistic practices without hierarchy or glorification. Through these encounters, we have been learning to: • Listen to artists’ lived experiences and personal journeys • Discuss practices openly, including failures, experiments and uncertainties • Learn beyond institutions and formal classrooms • Build meaningful peer networks • Share knowledge, processes and resources • Create lasting relationships within the artistic community What began as studio visits has gradually become a community that shapes, supports and sustains CBY collectively. A community in progress - one studio, one conversation, one encounter at a time. #ChalaBhetuya #CBY #NaviMumbaiArtists #IndianContemporaryArt #ArtistCommunity #ArtistStudio #PeerLearning #ContemporaryArt #ArtPractice #ArtistNetwork #MaharashtraArtists

“Stillness is the ground from which all forms emerge.” In their latest series, the artist explores the sensory experience of space, stability, and quiet duration. Built through meticulous layers of color and textured, vibrating edges, geometric forms act not as rigid structures, but as catalysts to envision. Swept up in monochromatic depth and architectural memory, the viewer is invited into a continuous visual dialogue, shifting from rhythm to stillness and complexity to quiet balance.

Sandeep H. More A body of work as meticulous as it is meditative. Each painting emerges from an intensive process — layered with at least 50 applications of paint — creating surfaces that resonate with depth, complexity, and a quiet intensity. Rooted in spiritual inquiry, More’s practice draws from the sacred geometry of temple architecture and the subtle energy of devotional spaces. Guided by indigenous traditions and esoteric philosophies, his art becomes a meeting point between the material and the metaphysical. Through soft transitions and atmospheric layering — masterfully rendered in the technique of sfumato — figures, forms, and symbols dissolve into light and color, inviting viewers into a space where thought becomes stillness, and stillness becomes revelation. These are not merely paintings to be looked at — they are thresholds to be crossed. Each work is an invitation to pause, reflect, and enter a liminal realm where the boundaries between the known and the unknowable quietly dissolve.
