BEAUTIFUL BIZARRE ARTIST DIRECTORY | We are excited to welcome artist @sandra_yagi ⭐ Sandra Yagi was raised in suburban Denver Colorado, USA and from an early age she loved science especially biology and drawing. Her parents instilled in her an ethic of getting a “useful” education because of their concern for monetary and domestic stability a result of their internment with other Japanese-Americans during WWII and their desire for their children to assimilate. As a result, Sandra’s studies focused on business, she obtained a Master's in Business Administration, and worked in the corporate world for 27 years at major financial institutions. However, due to the pent-up need to create, she took up drawing and painting again at age 32, while still working in finance. Sandra left corporate life behind in 2008 and became a full-time artist. With a viewpoint rooted in logic and science, and a curiosity for the macabre, she explores themes such as mythology, mortality, human experience and our impact on the natural world. Bewitched! Kitsune in the House Arc Project Gallery, June 20 – July 18, 2026 Sandy Yagi Artist Statement Tamamo no Mae The kitsune Tamamo No Mae is one of the most famous yokai in Japan.   She is a kitsune who turned into a beautiful woman and entered the Emperor Konoe’s  court approximately 900 years ago.  Eventually she  bewitched the emperor with her beauty and wit. He fell ill, and one of the emperor’s advisors realized the courtesan was actually a fox.  The emperor’s  retainers went to slay her. When she was felled by an arrow, her spirit was trapped in a large stone, known as Sessho Seki. Strangely, it split in two in 2022. I’ve tried to show that moment when her soul escaped. Inari Okami The painting depicts the Japanese goddess Inari with her fox attendants. She is the kami of fertility, rice,  agriculture and prosperity, and is very revered. I have her in an ancient Heian era kimono, as she is an entity that has been worshipped since ancient times (700 CE at least). Inari’s foxes are always pure white and act as messengers, and statues of these kitsune are also placed around the entry to Shinto shrines dedicated to Inari. Sandra Yagi is an artist living and working in San Francisco, California USA. She was raised in Denver, Colorado, and from an early age loved science and art. She worked in the corporate world, where she put in 27 years at major financial institutions. However, due to the pent-up need to create, she took up drawing and painting again at age 32, while still working in finance. She left the corporate life in 2008 and became a full time artist. Her works are in numerous private collections, including those of Axl Rose, Ben Stiller, Paul Ruscha, and film director Lee Unkric.

CURATED BY PRISCILLA OTANI  Foxes appear in folklore all over the world:  in the Americas, Asia and Europe. In folk tales, they are consistently portrayed as anthropomorphic creatures possessing human-like characteristics of tricksters, shapeshifters, vengeful seductresses, spell-casters, or messengers from the gods. They appear benevolent, but their benign demeanor is a disguise for their malevolence. Bewitched is an exhibition by seven Bay Area artists who have personal affinities for the kitsune, or the fox and have created works of art that represent various manifestations of this creature. Whether freaky or kawaii, these foxes will no doubt leave a lasting impression of their magical power on the viewer.
