🍁 A mound of fabric leaves gather on the floor, marked with enlarged forms of stomata, the microscopic pores through which trees release moisture into the air. Above, long chiffon ribbons descend from the ceiling, tracing the vertical movement of breath, vapour, and weather.

Printed fabric banners bearing cryptic, elemental symbols hang in the space like devotional forms. Drawing on Renaissance and cathedral visual traditions, the work uses fabric, symbolism, and scale to gesture toward the atmosphere itself as a cathedral.

Through symbol, fabric, and atmosphere, 𝘚𝘬𝘺 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 gestures toward the vast system of air that surrounds and sustains us. It offers space to pause and breathe within that system.

★ OPENING TONIGHT, 6PM — 𝘚𝘬𝘺 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 by Sandy Sanderson

Informed by the biotic pump theory 𝘚𝘬𝘺 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 explores air as a living, relational force. Approached through an animist lens, air is encountered not as empty space, but as a presence: a companion, a carrier, a friend.

Printed fabric banners bearing cryptic, elemental symbols hang in the space like devotional forms. Drawing on Renaissance and cathedral visual traditions, the work uses fabric, symbolism, and scale to gesture toward the atmosphere itself as a cathedral.

𝘚𝘬𝘺 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 is a solo exhibition developed during @sandy_sanderson_ past year as our 2025 HIC_ARA (HIC Services Artist Residency Award) recipient!
The 2026 HIC_ARA recipient will also be announced tonight at 6:30pm.

After an enriching 12 months at The Creator Incubator as the 2025 HIC_ARA (𝘏𝘐𝘊 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥) recipient, Sandy Sanderson concludes her residency with her solo exhibition 𝘚𝘬𝘺 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴.
Throughout the year, Sanderson has thoughtfully expanded upon her practice, exploring air as a living, relational force through soft sculptural forms, fabric and sound. Supported by the time, space and encouraging artistic community offered through the residency, she has been able to deepen her research and develop a vibrant new body of work. We are incredibly proud to celebrate Sandy @sandy_sanderson_ and all that she has achieved during her residency with us ♥︎

✷ Join us for the opening this Saturday March 7 from 6pm at The Creator Incubator.

‘Sky Rivers’ by Sandy Sanderson opens tomorrow in the Big Space 🫧

5 — 15 March 2026
Please join us for opening celebrations this Saturday 7 March, from 6pm!

Sandy Sanderson’s enchanting solo exhibition Sky Rivers, developed over the past year as our 2025 HIC_ARA recipient, explores air as a living, relational force, something that moves between bodies, forests, and weather, and is never fully known.

Sky Rivers is informed by the biotic pump theory, which describes how forests actively generate wind and rain through collective breathing and release.
Through symbol, fabric, and atmosphere, the installation gestures toward the vast system of air that surrounds and sustains us—offering space to pause and breathe within that system.

Approached through an animist lens, air is encountered not as empty space, but as a presence: a companion, a carrier, a friend.

The installation takes form as soft sculptural elements and sound, creating space to slow down, rest, and breathe.
