A Rose is a Rose is a Rose

Artwork details:
Medium: Oil pastel
Paper: A4, 300gsm
Pastels: @Artme
Colour palette: Red, coral, olive green, grey/silver and turquoise
Techniques: Tissue blending and cotton bud blending
Style: Expressive, imperfect and intentionally wobbly

This piece is inspired by the quote “A rose is a rose is a rose” and my own interpretation of Johnny Depp’s painting A Rose is a Rose is a Rose.

I’m continuing to develop my oil pastel style and, rather than chasing perfection, I’m learning to embrace the imperfections. The wobbly lines, uneven shapes and visible texture are becoming part of what makes my work feel like mine.

For this piece, I wanted a bold, slightly nostalgic colour palette, with vibrant reds and corals for the roses, olive-green leaves, a soft grey background and turquoise for the vase.

I used tissue to blend the larger background areas, while my trusty cotton buds came in handy for the smaller, more intricate details. Honestly, cotton buds are becoming an unofficial member of my art supplies team.

I’m really enjoying seeing how my style develops with every piece. I’m not aiming for perfectly symmetrical roses or perfectly straight lines. I want my work to feel expressive, tactile and human.

Because sometimes a rose is a rose… even when it’s a little bit wobbly.

Hi Dahlings,

✨LOVE LETTER✨
A4 Original Oil Pastel Artwork

Part of my Oil Pastel Moods series, Love Letter is all about warmth, affection and unapologetic pink.

This piece developed through layers of pink, crimson, red and burgundy, with each shape flowing into the next. I wasn’t trying to paint a particular object or scene. Instead, I wanted to create something that feels romantic, playful and a little bit dramatic.

I worked organically, layering colour and allowing the shapes to develop as I went. Some areas are soft and hazy, while others are deeper and more intense, creating movement across the page.

I love how oil pastel allows the marks of the process to remain visible. The texture gives the colours a richness that you simply don’t get from a perfectly smooth surface.

ARTWORK DETAILS
Title: Love Letter
Medium: Oil pastel
Size: A4 — 21 × 29.7 cm
Paper: 300gsm artist’s paper
Materials: Artex oil pastels in shades of pink, red, crimson and burgundy; cotton buds for blending.

This series isn’t about painting what something looks like. It’s about painting what something feels like.

✨PURPLE HAZE
A4 Original Oil Pastel Artwork✨

Part of my Oil Pastel Moods series, Purple Haze explores the feeling of getting completely lost in colour.

This piece is built around layers of purple, violet, magenta and pink, with darker areas creating depth against brighter flashes of colour.

As with the rest of the series, I wasn’t trying to represent a specific realistic image. I wanted the shapes to move across the page almost like clouds, waves or thoughts — something you can interpret however you want.

The process was intuitive: layering colour, blending sections and allowing new shapes to emerge rather than planning every detail beforehand. I particularly love the way the grainy oil pastel catches the light and leaves tiny traces of the marks underneath.

For me, abstraction is about giving the viewer room to bring their own mood and memories to the artwork.

What mood do you see in it?

✨WATERS EDGE✨
A4 Original Oil Pastel Artwork

Part of my Oil Pastel Moods series, Waters Edge is about evoking a feeling rather than creating a realistic image.

This piece was inspired by a childhood memory of dipping my toes into the water’s edge and feeling the sand shift beneath my feet.

I wanted to capture that sensation through colour, texture and movement. The blues suggest cool water, while the yellows, ochres and oranges bring in warm sand and sunlight.

Oil pastel felt perfect because its grainy texture reminds me of grains of sand. I layered and blended the colours organically, using cotton buds to soften areas and my fingers to move the pigment and build texture.

I’m also planning to scan my Oil Pastel Moods series onto my iPad, capturing the texture of the originals so they can eventually become digital art prints.

For me, this isn’t about painting exactly what a beach looks like. It’s about painting what being there feels like.

A little fan-art love for Lily Petal from BBC’s The Hairdresser Mysteries, played by the fabulous Sally Phillips.

I’m completely obsessed with this wonderfully quirky cosy-crime series. It has everything I love: mysteries, village gossip, colourful characters, fabulous hair and that deliciously nostalgic 1970s-inspired style.

The fashion, bold colours, retro interiors, big hair and glamorous styling give the show such a gorgeous vintage feel. It’s basically catnip for anyone who loves a bit of retro glamour with their murder mystery.

Lily herself is such a fabulous character — glamorous, curious, witty and always seemingly one suspicious conversation away from uncovering another mystery.

Naturally, I HAD to draw her.

I wanted to capture that gorgeous 70s aesthetic while giving Lily my own wobbly-art treatment, with warm colours, bold shapes and plenty of imperfect little details.

Because apparently watching a brilliant TV show isn’t enough for me. I have to become emotionally invested in the characters and then draw them.

If you love cosy crime, vintage fashion, quirky characters and wonderfully British eccentricity, The Hairdresser Mysteries is definitely worth adding to your watch list.

Now, excuse me while I contemplate whether I need to add significantly more 70s glamour to my wardrobe…

Made using:
iPad Mini with A1 Chip
My custom made Caran’d Ache inspired brush

Dimensions: 210mm x 297mm

Love,
Disabled Dahling xoxo

Hi Dahlings,

It’s been lovely getting back to creating after a chaotic few weeks of concerts, accessibility adventures, falls and generally giving my body plenty of reasons to complain. Thank you for the well wishes by the way!

My sketchbook has been patiently waiting for me, so my latest piece, ‘Strawberry Fields’ feels like a little reset and an ode to my summer filled with joy and excitement, turning over a new leaf so to speak and starting a fresh.

The idea started with something I found fascinating about strawberries: they produce little “young” plants from the original plant through runners, which eventually grow into strawberry plants of their own.

I created this strawberry-inspired set of nesting dolls to represent growth, connection and the idea of something small eventually becoming its own thing.

This is your reminder that creativity doesn’t disappear when life gets busy. Sometimes it just waits quietly until you’re ready to pick up your pencil again.

6 x 9 inch prints available to those interested!

(Image description: A whimsical hand-drawn illustration of three smiling strawberry-inspired nesting dolls. A large red strawberry character sits in the centre with two smaller strawberry characters beside it. They have rosy cheeks, closed smiling eyes, brown hair and green leafy collars, with green stems on top. The background is soft yellow with mustard yellow and pale blue framing and simple flowers around the edges.)

Watermelon Study in Abstract
A playful exploration of colour, shape and summer nostalgia. Inspired by the juicy geometry of watermelon slices, this piece layers vibrant pinks, deep reds and fresh greens into a joyful abstract composition that celebrates the energy of the season.

“I remember being shocked that a peach could be just pink.” — David Hockney

Colour has a way of surprising us, transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary. This piece is my celebration of that vibrant possibility.
