Meet Sandy

Sandy is what we’d call a “founding member” of The Unit — she was already lifting with Jess and Rupert at another location before joining us here, and she’s been an integral part of our community ever since.

When she first started, Sandy was training five days a week, mixing in conditioning and light lifting, without any specific goals beyond staying fit and getting stronger. Since then, she’s done exactly that — gaining both strength and confidence with the big lifts and in training overall.

Shortly after joining, she decided she wanted to showcase her strength. In competition, Sandy has made her mark in powerlifting. She’s set multiple state records and consistently ranks among the top lifters in her class.

What she values most about The Unit is the culture — a community where everyone supports each other across all disciplines and training levels, with great energy and constant encouragement. Her favorite training days are AMRAPs (“as many reps as possible”) because, as she puts it, “the weight isn’t too heavy, and it’s fun to try and beat your number from the previous week.”

“Overall, I’m so happy to be part of The Unit, to train with my teammates, and to learn from such knowledgeable and experienced coaches,” Sandy says. “It keeps me young — The Unit is my home away from home.”

These people deserve a permanent spot. Let me count the ways @rupertmontejo has tried to kill us. "Misloading" the bar, programming anything over 3 reps, and making us lift heavy week after week – we've all miraculously survived his multiple attempts to kill us! Love my strong ass powerlifting teammates!

Congratulations to all the strongman competitors who took part today and did some superhuman lifts! A heartfelt thank you to my team for ensuring the event ran smoothly. I truly believe that the energy generated by the volunteers contributes significantly to the meet’s success. We foster a culture of support within our team. A special shout-out to @strongman.on.rt120 and his team for creating a similar atmosphere and putting on an impressive show! Thanks to @smash.it.steve for encouraging us to organize this event and for your guidance leading up to meet day. Also, thanks to @chrisdaloia for helping improve the organization of the meet.
