Very much looking forward to getting to know this bunch of lovely creative humans! I have always found residencies bring with them the unexpected, so I'm trying not to overthink my intentions too much at this stage.

I'm also hoping to use this opportunity to invite studio visits, so if you are around during March and would like to drop in and say hi, have a coffee and a chat, you will be very welcome. I'm not there every day so drop me a line and we can fix a date.

It is absolutely brilliant to announce10 remarkable artists will set up studio practice in the gallery for just over a month! From the work they produce we will curate an exhibition that will run simultaneously to our 22nd solo resident Yang-Ha’s exhibition upstairs.

This dynamic and innovative opportunity provides ten artists from across the world a communal studio space for four weeks, culminating in a group exhibition featuring works exclusively created on the premises.
The Radical Residency® programme is a direct response to the calibre of applications received for the coveted 3 month solo residency based on the first floor of Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop. Due to the high standard of applicants, it only seemed logical to expand the programme whilst also allowing an opportunity for the public to witness the artists during a ‘studio work-in-progress’ environment through a series of open discussions and critical seminars. Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop founder and director Stacie McCormick sees the Radical Residency® as a means of providing not only space and time for artists to work on their own individual practices, but also to open up opportunities for dialogue and exchange, transforming the normally hushed gallery space into a thriving hub of potential provocation and conversation. This is a place where artists have a chance to learn from each other, disrupting their routine, change context, reflect comparatively, as well as garner feedback and support from both colleagues and visitors all within a nurturing professional space.

Presenting existing and newly commissioned work by artist Nye Thompson, VERTIGO opens our eyes to the world of surveillance, satellites, and the new frontier that is space. Visit @eastquaywatchet.

⭐ ‘Acts of Gathering’ at Eden Project. (On view until Jan 2023)

Acts of Gathering brings together a number of artworks that celebrate and interrogate the nature of food culture in a rapidly changing world. Including work by Jonathan Baldock, Serge Attukwei Clottey, Jumana Manna, Maria Nepomuceno, Uriel Orlow and Nina Royle and Lucy Stein. Visit @edenprojectcornwall.

⭐ ‘I Chose This’ at Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange. (On view until 28 Oct)

I Chose This brings together over 50 artworks which have been on loan to primary schools across West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Featured artists include Barbara Hepworth, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Victor Passmore alongside many others. Visit @newlynexchange.

⭐ ‘Four on the Floor | Six in the Air’ by Bronwen Buckridge at Harbour House. (On view until 16 Sep)

Artist Bronwen Buckeridge works with birders and crochet makers to form a human-powered machine, making crochet in response to bird activity in different locales around the town. Visit @harbour.house.art.wellbeing.

⭐ ‘Otherworlds’ by Sang-Mi Rha and Marianne Walker at Levinsky Gallery. (On view until 26 August)

Sang-Mi Rha and Marianne Walker, two artists with distinct yet complementary practices, here present Otherworlds, where the lines between the real and the imagined, between 2D and 3D, blur and shift, to create works that intrigue and entice. Visit @theaiplym.

Great day in Plymouth yesterday. So glad I got to see #otherworlds @theaiplym Congratulations to @sangmirha and @mariannelwalker it’s a joyous show!
Really enjoyed visiting @theboxplymouth too, so much to see and everything is so beautifully displayed. Particularly love the way all the specimens are exhibited.

ArtWorks Open - Sang-Mi Rha: "I Can See", oil and acrylic on canvas.

My practice departs from a long-standing interest in human memory. Havinggrown up across four continents in America, Asia, Europe and Oceania, the paintings capture fragments of my peripatetic experiences through tracing
private memories. Transmutative nature of memory provides a setting for reality and imagination to coexist. With the acceptance that memories are malleable constructs that are reconstructed with each recall, the
autonomous world of ONeither Nor¹ with its own logic, time and place comes into being. Children wear animal masks made of cardboard boxes. The masks symbolise third culture kids¹ (TCKs) conflicts in identity arising from transitions as citizens of everywhere and nowhere. Through the repeated process of layering and erasing, the paintings come into being, enabling my journey to end for the commencement of the viewers.
