My journey into higher education launched at the end of my 8th grade year at Willard Intermediate in Santa Ana. That year was a pivotal turning point because I came to terms with what it meant to be “undocumented”. How?! Well, my desire was to be part of the “A Better Chance Program”, which would have allowed me to go to an out of state private high school and experience what it felt like to be a college freshmen. Due to not having a legal status I was not eligible for this program.
HOWEVER, 🍯 HUNNNNNY!
Although I felt distraught, I was never discouraged. I had 3 great middle school teachers that helped me & I made my way to Middle College High School (MCHS) at Santa Ana College. The goal of MCHS is for students to graduate from high school with either an A.A. degree or at least over an year of undergrad course work.
I graduated in 2010 and decided to stay at Santa Ana College until 2013, because before that time, there was no financial aid (such as CA Dream Act) & private scholarships were like finding a hidden treasure. When the CA Dream Act came about, I said, “this is it...it’s my time to transfer” and I applied to 4 UC’s. My final decision rested between UCI & UC Berkeley. After looking at my financial aid and asking countless questions, I transferred to UCI & it was the best choice I made! I got generous scholarships (THANK YOU TO 🥰ALL WHO INVESTED IN ME & MY EDUCATION). Before graduating in 2015 (#ZotZot) I’ve always worked and managed @ times 2-3 different jobs... 🔥I’ll explain in future postings about transferring from a 2-year to a 4-year.
🔥I’ll also shine light on undocumented/DACAmented individuals and the complexities of higher education. 🔥I ’ll also talk about career and professional development.
If you’ve read this far, thanks! I leave this quote as you end/commence your day, @doloreshuerta said, “ La lucha da energía (Struggle gives you energy).” My struggles give me the energy to challenge the norm and my faith in God motivates me to keep walking forward (caminar adelante) and advocate for my community. ••••••••••••••• #AttallahCollege

SO proud of the GFHS Drumline today! Competing for the first time in the history of our school, and they get 1st place! We still have a lot of work to do, but it's nice to get this little bit of success. Today, we celebrate. On Monday, we get back to work! Huge thanks to Danny Garcia (@dg_percussion ), Danny Cortez (@Danny_to_the_wanny ), Amelia Santos (@princessameeelia ), and Orlando Franco (@orlandurrr ) for designing and teaching these kids to success! #adla #adlapercwinds #drumline #percussion #indoorpercussion #godinez #gfhspride #blackandgoldregiment #westminster #music #marchingband #banddirector #sausd #artsed

Thank you to Santa Ana HS for accommodating the Godinez Winter Guard. Without facilities at our site to use, it’s sure nice to have a dry place in the rain through the collaboration of great #SAUSD band programs. HUGE thank you to Mr. Jeff Bishop for allowing us to use the small gym on short notice, and huge thank you to Mr. Victor de los Santos for helping us out with the nuts and bolts when we got here. The girls (and boys) were so happy to be dry tonight! #sausd #sanarts #santaana #sahs #colorguard #winterguard #gfhs #buddyband #music
