Big heartfelt thanks to @dettrinityfilmfest for the Inspirational Short Film Award at the 20th anniversary of this lovely festival. The most wonderful feedback about my father’s story is how inspired people feel after they’ve seen the film. So nice to meet festival owners @mmarshalle and @lazarlegacyliaison - I also hear “I want to know more about…” - I’m now working on an extended cut (up to 10 additional minutes) to enhance streaming options per the distributor. Diving in to dad’s world of music is an honor and so fun to get into it with comrades, editor @lucgiddens and sound engineer extraordinaire & EP @kevinrlacy 🎥 🎶

OTD in Music History: Notable American songwriter Philip Springer (b. 1926) is born exactly 100 years ago in New York City.

Born into a musical family, after a stint in the U.S. Army during WWII, Springer enrolled at Columbia College where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in composition. Remarkably, this was followed by further musical studies at both NYU (where he earned his Masters) and UCLA (where he earned his Doctorate), which he pursued while simultaneously carving out a career as a successful songwriter.

Today, Springer is best known as the co-writer of the enduring Christmas classic, "Santa Baby" (1953) -- but over the course of a career that has now spanned more than 70 years, he has actually penned more than 500 works, including numerous other pop songs that have been covered by major artists such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, Eartha Kitt, and Aretha Franklin.

Springer was also the last writing partner of celebrated lyricist E.Y. "Yip" Harburg (1896 - 1981), who famously co-wrote the soundtrack to "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) alongside composer Harold Arlen (1905 - 1986).

Springer is now one of the last living links to the so-called "Brill Building Era"... the mid-century golden age of American popular songwriting when composers, lyricists, and publishers all collaborated at 1619 Broadway in New York City...

Amazingly, Springer is still actively composing and he reportedly pens ~35 new songs per year!
