Join Global South writers as they revisit Bandung’s 1955 dream, a new world order built on Asian-African unity and justice.

Seventy years on, with neo-colonialism and far-right nationalism still rising, they ask the urgent question: where do we stand now, and what does moving forward truly look like?

Join us for an incredible journey across the world with @santigrams and dive deep into the Commonwealth links to this forgotten history

Black Convicts, published by Jacaranda on 15 October, recovers the largely erased stories of Australia’s Black convicts and, in doing so, opens up a much wider conversation about empire, slavery, race and memory. At least 15 convicts on the First Fleet of 1788 were of African descent, with the number rising to almost 500 by 1840, yet many of these lives have effectively disappeared from the national story.

There is also a particularly fascinating Commonwealth and Caribbean dimension: Santilla draws connections between British, Caribbean and Australian colonial histories, while exploring archival research itself as a way of recovering histories that have been marginalised or erased.

We'd love for you to join the conversation ...

Yesterday we had the honour of hosting @firstchapterpresents first No Skips all ages event at the kiosk. Making the day extra special was Arlo and his band the Messy Checkers debuting a single from their forthcoming album. The day was such a beautiful display community at its finest. Days like these have always been the vision for Ultra Culture. Thanks to everyone who came and played and stayed and helped us clean up! Let’s do it all again ❤️

We’re delighted to share that the brilliant @santigrams , author of our upcoming title Black Convicts, will be speaking at #OzLitFest on the 18th October! 🙌🏾

Shortlisted for the 2025 Stella Prize and the 2025 Queensland Literary Awards, Black Convicts is a remarkable work of historical recovery that shines a light on the Black convicts whose stories have been erased from Australia’s national memory. In recovering their lives, Santilla Chingaipe offers a fresh understanding of this fatal shore, showing how empire, slavery, race and memory have shaped the nation.

Get your tickets to OzLit Fest at foyles.co.uk or fanza.org, and pre-order Black Convicts now at jacarandabooks.co.uk 📚💜

The first episode of ‘Tastes of Africa’ directed by Rendah Haj, and produced by Kauthar Abdulalim at Blacksand Pictures, is out now!

Presented by author, historian and filmmaker Santilla Chingaipe, the series follows her setting out to host the ultimate African dinner party for her friends, only to realise she’s not just missing recipes, but also the stories behind them.

‘Tastes of Africa’ is a 3 x 15-min documentary series that follows her vibrant, cross-cultural journey through Melbourne’s African food scene. Guided by the wisdom of aunties and friends, every bite is served with a story.

Cinespace is proud to both have supported ‘Tastes of Africa’ in its post-production, and to have had the wonderful Kauthar Abdulalim in our cohort from the organisation’s inception!

Kauthar was one of the very first participants of a Cinespace program with Brimbank that invited Muslim filmmakers to create short films combatting islamophobia, and is now a key member of our board!

We are excited to continue supporting independent filmmaking from diaspora, and enjoy watching (and tasting) the fruits of platforming filmmakers like Kauthar!

Watch the first episode through the link in our bio! 🍽️
