S01E02 Sara Wiens on Art, Wildfire & Climate Grief| The Indigenous Artist’s Way Circle

During our Indigenous Artist’s Way Circle visit, @tanyasnow07 asks artist @sara.wiens about her philosophy and approach to climate grief. Sara shares how art can gently open the door to difficult conversations.

Our visit explores wildfire, climate grief, colonialism, Indigenous relationships with land and the possibilities for healing through art.

Our full conversation premieres tonight, October 8, at 6 PM Mountain Time on my Shelley Wiart YouTube channel!

This week, our Indigenous Artist’s Way Circle visited with artist @sara.wiens whose practice explores BC wildfires, climate grief, regeneration and our relationship with the land. Our visit with @tanyasnow07, @castlegrayskull13, and Vanessa moved beyond Sara’s art into a larger conversation about traditional wildfire practices, the need for Indigenous-led climate work, solastalgia, and finding hope.

Please watch our full visit with Sara this Thursday at 6 pm on my YouTube channel. Link in bio.

🙏Overwhelmed with gratitude this morning.

Thank you to everyone who came out to my artist talk last night — friends, family, and new faces who I’m so glad crossed paths with me.

🤗Sharing this work is always a little vulnerable, and having a room full of people who showed up to listen, ask questions, and connect with it meant more than I can say.

👋To the ones who’ve been with me since the beginning, and to the ones I just met — thank you for making me feel like the Shuswap is the kind of place where this work belongs.

🫢I am over the moon and beyond grateful for your support.🕯️

btw did anyone see the moon 🌙 last night? So cool 😎

⚡️Artist Spotlight⚡️

Sara Wiens (@sara.wiens) is a #TOAF65 artist who tells us a bit about the works she will be showcasing:

I am sharing some of my studio and process of a series of mixed media paintings depicting the flight paths of honeybees across the landscape. The lifespan of a single bee may be only 6 weeks in the summer, yet these tiny creatures have a profound impact on the ecosystem. The complexity of layered lines and colour patches in the artwork remind us that over time, the layers of different bee individuals overlap repeatedly to create an indispensable imprint on the survival of all species. I am excited to share my work at TOAF this summer at booth 304 and online all year at toaf.ca.

Check out more of Sara’s work on TOAF.ca or by clicking this post in our link in bio!

Axis Mundi is a bridge between species, materials, and living systems. Rather than centering humans as the primary participants, it positions plants, animals, microbes, water, soil, and atmosphere as equally held within this vertical axis of relation.
This Artist Collective is twelve individuals from across the country drawn together through their Ecological MFA 2027 cohort at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Axis Mundi offers a place where ecological processes, embodied experience and unforeseen forces interact to shape our future shared world. #ecoart #contemporaryart #axismundi #canadianart #art

Art is popping up in the most wonderful places downtown. 🎨

Students from Grades 3–9 at Heartwood Learning Community School, led by teacher Sara Wiens, have created this beautiful mural and it’s tucked right in the alley behind the Ross Street parking lot at Second Harvest’s food resource centre.

This beautiful piece of community art came together with the blessing of Bill Laird and the gratitude of the entire Second Harvest team, and it is absolutely worth a detour on your next downtown visit.

Oh and see how many worms and caterpillars you can spot while you’re there. 🐛

This is what community looks like. ❤️
