In my sadness at the passing of Dolly Parton, I have been retracing where I have acknowledged her impact on my life in what I have written. I have no shame in disclosing the tears her passing has brought to my redneck eyes.

Yeah, back in the months preceding the ‘True North’ show opening in Palma de Mallorca at @galeria_fermay in 2023, I agreed with @tonifrr, a fellow curator, owner of the gallery and longterm compadre, that I didn’t want to do a print publication; that I wanted to put it all online so that more people would have free access to the discourse.

The simple truth is that this is one of the shows that brought me the greatest personal joy and that I also feel that the book-length text—freely available to you online—is one of the signature pieces I have written, rather eccentric and nutty, but frankly, credible nonetheless.

Just check out truenorthproject dot org. Dolly is soooo in there at the core.

It’s one of the pieces of my writing I know would have brought a smile to my father Denton’s lips.

People kinda forget that when I first encountered the work of American artist @sarahbakercakes -thank you @jemima_brown_artist —there weren’t nearly as many American artists on the scene in London as in the post-Trump exodus.

I’d already seen her work loaned by a Belgian collector for a show in which her work and that of Jemima was shown in Bruges. But a studio visit with her was like I had rediscovered a “free space” explored by American artists not really prevalent in the ponderous work of many UK artists at that time. We exchanged banter about Versace, Vuitton and the B-52s.

One of the things I love about working with Sarah is that we can speak in a kinda shorthand. And, I think the ultimate power of the transcendence in her work was brought home to me when my Belgian partner sat watching and re-watching one of her video works in a design hotel art fair I organised in Brussels.

When we were closing down for the evening and I needed to scoot him along to join the dinner, I will always remember those beautifully long eyelashes of his blinking as I went to get him (having spent hours watching and re-watching the video work.) His evil grin: “I LIKE this, Monkey!”

Sarah is a profoundly powerful artist. But when you have a modest Flemish DJ who would never describe himself as an art critic be that clear about your work, you should pat yourself on the back.

One of the reasons @instagai1 has remained an enduring friend is because he has never once given me a legislative prescription for being a “good” Queer. Bluntly, I am not, often at odds with the tendences that the rainbow flag nation demands.

Activated by reading Genet at a young age, amplified by Fassbinder—and, no, not ‘Querelle’ but ‘Faustrecht der Freiheit’ aka ‘Fox and his Friends’ (1975)—I have always been a problematic little f**ker. If there weren’t the word count here, I would explain the RAF concept of “self-critique” in the true political terms with which they were first, didactically, imposed on me. There is not space for that here.

Brad Davis was a beautiful man. I’m not one of those Queers who projects stupid hopes onto pretty straight guys—there are so many other painless options—but, along with Rainer Werner, he really moved me; the junkies’ grand finale. And simply f**k off if you think there is anything denigrative in that statement. Both men still shine like stars for me decades later.

It seems like a bizarre seque, but it is why I have always been drawn to the work of women artists. The image of the “ultimate” male beauty does not exist until women have spoken. Mic drop.

Sarah Baker is always coming out with some goodies and not long ago she launched a new travel friendly and highly collectable version of her perfumes in 15ml format. Same quality of packaging, bottle and cap, just on a smaller size.

Very excited and honored to be working on 3 large paintings for an artist collab with my all time favorite contemporary niche perfumer goddess @houseofsarahbaker @sarahbakercakes and her genius art director Kenneth.
Been grinding away for several months on these rawther complex (for me lolz) paintings but hope to share soon.
In the meantime I encourage everybody to check out Sarah’s fragrant world of soap opera glamour, scandal & opulent excess.
Sarah began as a visual & conceptual artist and I’ve always admired and connected with her varied creative projects.
She’s also the coolest and kindest in the perfume industry. 💖

Scent of the day.
‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ @houseofsarahbaker
I wish I was far from the madding crowd, sadly I’m invaded by family for a few days & it’s still the hyper clam before the all ready excited nephews are filled with chocolate eggs.

This beautiful musky woody floral by @miguelmatosperfumes is giving me escape though with its fresh aromatics & playful fruits pushing through musky green aromatic haze. Eucalyptus & cassis burst with freshness & a hint of wild as jasmine purrs rubbing itself into a powdery mossy haze on a soft leather wrapped around firm cedar wood. Aromatic, fun with a flirty edge, fresh like a spring breeze & a fruity kiss before you go into the woods with your lover.
