POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I’ve been lucky enough to attend the writers and illustrators residency at @milkwoodny as a part of their first residency group to kick off the 2025 season. Even writing out the words now feels absolutely surreal. When I got the email of acceptance, I was so worked up and excited I gave myself an actual fever.

Thank you @milkwoodny ♄ Thank you @sophieblackall and @ ed schmidt for inviting us to get comfortable in your magical space and for believing in the work we’re producing. Thank you @paige.on.purpose for your consistent care and kindness. Thank you @ ducklings for the chirps and the waddles, I hope you still love me even though you ran away so much!!

Thank you to my nine co-residents. To every person who came to the communal table with an open note/sketchbook, an open mind, and an open heart. I’ve learned so much from you all and I’m so grateful for your generosity of spirit. These days will stay with me.

Gather together to work on your ability to combine images and words—only to find that no words can describe the experience, and no images will do it justice either.

Have you ever had a dream come true?!đŸ„č♄

This little reel is quick but my time spent at @milkwoodny will probably pop up in bits and pieces in ways or another over the years to come.

I am so very grateful to have had this opportunity. To Sophie and Ed for their vision and generosity. For the support of @deptlgsc in making this trip to the other side of the world. For the kindness and passion of the other residents who shared this week with me. The chance to deep dive into the serious (and ridiculous) business of children’s books was invaluable.

I still feel teary when I think of all that enormous passion for children’s books (and everything that comes with that - the empathy, playfulness, whimsy, earnestness) which brought us together in this beautiful place.

I think that if you are dedicated to improving yourself as a creator you don’t come to residencies like this without a certain degree of vulnerability. Maybe you are trying to reach to another level, maybe you are trying to pivot or simply be better at things you know you could be better at. Maybe you are burned out and looking for a better way.

I felt all the things attending this retreat, incredibly inspired as well as a little overwhelmed. It made me feel affirmed but also small. I learned a lot but now
what to do with that knowledge?

Anyway, I have 24hours in the air to feverishly think about it all and the embrace of my children to look forward to. I was excited to come to NY, but coming back to them is even better. ❀

Coming back down to earth after the most wonderful week at Milkwood. I’m not sure what I expected— maybe to get lots of work done and to be extremely focused and productive. I got a little of that, yes, but also something much better— this wonderful group who left me feeling so affirmed and with my creative compass stronger than it’s been in a long time! Thank you Sophie, Ed, Paige, and ducklings for this space. What a gift to our creative community! @milkwoodny

❗TODAY, MY NEW MANGA RELEASES!❗ Over the course of a year, I created it. It’s over 116 pages! You can get it exclusively at @the.artist.alley, a small local art consignment store in Aberdeen Center! It will be available for online order starting May 24th!

To celebrate the release today, I decided to colour one of the pages. The work itself isn’t in full colour, but I like the way my work looks in colour, so I’m really excited to explore more of that for my next works! In this scene, the protagonist, Alice, reminisces on what it’s like to sell art at artist alleys. I feel the same way. In my 4 years at university, the greatest discovery was the pure elation and joy that I get at art markets. Talking about art and being in a room full of fellow passionate illustrators and being able to do it again and again has genuinely been the highlight of these few years. Coincidentally, this month marks the 2-year anniversary of me doing it! I have met so many memorable and important people I love to me at these events, and made so many unforgettable memories as well. This summer, I will be ramping up the number of markets that I do significantly, and I look forward to being in the space that I love once more!
‹🔜To thank end, I’m pleased to announce my next event will be @raincitycomiccon on May 24th! Be sure to check out tons of fresh grad Illustration Majors from @emilycarrillustration there as well!

You may remember that a year ago, I asked for artists to submit pictures of their booths to my DMs. That was for this! Every booth in this piece is an actual booth by an actual artist! They are:

Shoutout to “two guys who are actually the same guy but still different guys” gotta be one of my favourite dynamics FR❗THE REVIEWS ARE IN! I asked two acclaimed illustrators and personal mentors for their thoughts on A CANADIAN’S GUIDE TO MAKING MANGA, a 116-page manga (technically a doujinshi) that I’ll be releasing very soon! (May 9th!)

“(Shoba)’s work is transportive, introspective, and thoughtfully crafted with a level of detail that would impress all readers.” -SARAH GREEN @sarahgreenstudio , award-winning illustrator of BORN HUNGRY

“Don’t let the title fool you, this book isn’t a ‘how to’ at all. In these pages, manga becomes a metaphor that bridges the gap between the old and new - youthful dreams to young adult realities; old world identities to new opportunities. It’s the Canadian immigrant experience packaged in a fresh, fun and exciting format. This book is fantastic.” -JEREMY TANKARD, @jeremytankboy creator of bestselling graphic novel series YORICK AND BONES (and gen Z childhood classic Grumpy Bird)

Swipe to see different editions of the book, including a crazy TRUE FAN DELUXE EDITION, which has everything I could think of crammed into it.

Real talk. Marketing a self-published book is weird and difficult. I tried doing it a half-decade ago to pretty poor results. Now I’m trying again, but the circumstances are entirely different. I’ve only gotten this far because of YOUR support. This is probably my most personal story ever, and when I finished writing it, I knew it needed to be told. It’s dedicated to other artists, especially Asian-Canadian ones, or anyone with a dream they weren’t sure what to do with. If you’ve ever felt unsure of your place in the world, I wrote this story for you. I don’t offer any answers, but perhaps if you and I both keep making art in this crazy world, we can create a little bit of meaning - together.
