POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

By all accounts, @dollyparton loved ALL people with the same hurricane force that she herself first received from God. She knew she was "unusual" (and, flawed) but she accepted her status as beloved daughter, and she could easily spot the imago dei in others. Perhaps especially in those who many would cast aside because they were also different and, perhaps, less acceptable to what is considered normal.

Truly, she was an enigma. In my childhood, we would see her often on TV and, though my brain couldn't make sense of all the mixed and confusing messages I received when I saw and heard her, I always knew in the deepest part of me that she possessed the kind of authenticity that I couldn't fully understand or name. I adored her, even though I wasn't free to express it out loud to everyone.

I'm grateful that, after 60 years of witnessing her life unfold in the public eye, she seemed to have (imperfectly) stayed true to the message she received first, and then freely gave to others.

In my observation, it's hard to finish well. Dolly seems to have done that and I am grateful for her shining example in a world that appears to have forgotten what true integrity looks like. May we all be challenged to follow her lead.

Your new song is incredible, Sarah! We’ve been listening to it in our home, and you and Melissa’s voices complement each other so beautifully. I felt inspired to make a quick watercolor portrait of Coogan. In my own season of grief in losing my dad, I honor your song and your process and your love for him. #grief #portrait #watercolor

Still thinking about this one.

Earlier this month, John Mark McMillan filled our 714 room for an intimate house show — just songs, stories, and a crowd close enough to feel every word. Thank you to everyone who came out, and to John Mark for sharing the night with our community.

This is what a house show feels like at Art House Grandview. More to come.

I have seen @johnmarkmcmillan probably somewhere close to 25 times. Easily one of my top five favorite artists of all time. And one of the only ones I’ve been able to have genuine fun conversations with over the years. He’s always been personable and friendly whether it’s been here in Kansas City or when I’ve seen him in his hometown in North Carolina. But tonight may be the last time I ever get to see him in concert. Because he’s done with the tour life so I couldn’t afford to miss this. This intimate family show was one of the most beautiful times I’ve ever seen him and I’m so grateful that I got to go. I am also grateful to @joshuaheathscott and @arthousegrandview for making this happen

When Jacob Joseph Berger played here, you could hear every word — because the whole room leaned in. A lawyer, a neighbor, a Grandview dad who also writes songs that stay with you.

House shows do that. They put you close enough to feel it. Next up: John Mark McMillan, live and acoustic. Tuesday, June 16, 7:30 PM at Art House Grandview.
