WORLD SAKE DAY 2026 ✨✨✨ thank you for celebrating with us, LA! We’re still glowing from our afternoon sharing sake with all the lovely faces who turned out on a sticky DTLA Sunday. You came, you sipped, you snacked, and we are just so delighted by our community

Every year our vendors who pour this event tell me afterwards “you have the best guests” (and they’re right) - everyone is always so thoughtful, asks the best questions, and your love for sake is just so *felt*

As for us, we’re already thinking about next year, stay tuned!

All the thanks to our team who made the snacks, made the room look good, and just made it happen. To our wonderful sake importers and distributors who spent their Sunday (a day off!) with us pouring and chatting, and always bring us everything delicious to keep us excited. And of course to our moonlighting host-with-the-most @lientigre for keeping us on track, keeping our spirits high, and taking all the sparkly photos 🩷

WORLD SAKE DAY this Sunday! And for the first time ever, we’ve got expert seminars 🧐

Two small group sessions led by two of our favorite people in sake. Kerry Tamura of World Sake is hosting an intro to sake - all the basics you’ll need to navigate a sake list and learn what you love. Or go deeper with Sachiko Miyagi, who’ll be leading a tasting designed to showcase how temperature and glassware impacts the flavor of sake

😮Women were banned from Sake breweries in Japan for hundreds of years, even though they were the original Sake brewers😱

🍶 During Covid, I interviewed 18 fabulous women in Sake🔥 who are doing amazing things - Master brewers, brewery owners, educators from Japan, Australia, Canada, USA, UK, France, Taiwan, and Italy.

Shochu Live this year was beyond successful and our hearts are full. We told all y’all that this year, the event would be better and bolder, but we could not have predicted what a truly magnificent event it turned out to be.

Shochu is still a relatively unknown spirit here in the States, but we truly felt the love on June 20 here in Oakland! It was a gorgeous day and everyone was ready to party (and learn something too)!

As America’s first and only shochu festival, we had:
100+ guests
40+ shochus to taste
7 shochu importers and brands
5 shochu makers from Japan
2 shochu seminars
Plus a dj, food, and many furry friends!

Here at Umami Mart, we are committed to bring shochu to the forefront in the U.S. as a leading world spirit. Distilled only once, shochu is an unique, low-proof spirit that can be made with anything from sweet potato and barley, to rice and cane sugar. It is rich in history and flavor, and we want more people to try it! Which is what Shochu Live is all about – trying different shochus in varying ways to bring out maximum enjoyment.

We’re lucky to be a part of a thriving community of shochu lovers both in the U.S. and Japan. Nearly all the importers and makers who participated in Shochu Live traveled by plane to get to Oakland – from as close as Los Angeles and New York, to as far as Miyazaki and Okinawa. This meant a lot to me as shochu director of Umami Mart, a small shop with a mission to bring awareness to Japanese drinks and drink culture.

It’s spooky season… and we’re bringing Godzilla🦖 Dress up and stay until the end of your session for a chance to win a Sake Godzilla bottle!🍶🤍

Towards the end of each session, we’ll hold a Blind Tasting Competition and contestants will be randomly chosen from the crowd to come up on stage.

Your challenge?👀 Guess whether the sake you’re tasting was made in the U.S. or in Japan. Get it right — and you might take home a Sake Godzilla bottle!

📌Prize is awarded at the end of each session.

Been to Japan 🇯🇵 many times and this is the first trip to @VisitGunma!

Only 2 hours away by shinkansen 🚅 Northwest of Tokyo, Gunma is a mountainous prefecture 🏔️ in the center of Japan. It is known for onsen resorts, hiking, skiing, whitewater rafting, and an abundance of nature. Gunma is a year-round destination with unique appeal in each season.

I was lucky to stay @Tatsumikan (辰巳館) ♨️
where I tried the regional cooking style “Irori Kensan-yaki” (grilled on the sunken fire) paired with fantastic sake. Which once upon a time the samurai skewered wild vegetables and river fish on their swords and cooked them on an open fire 🔥 known as “Kensaki-yaki” (sword grilling).

My room came with a private onsen and I was able to relax while enjoying the gorgeous view. Can’t forget the delicious breakfast that was fully served by the friendly staffs.

Highly recommended and Tatsumikan is definitely a highlight of my trip @SupportSake 🍶 and happy 100th anniversary!
