FORAGING LAWEN

Some medicinal plants only grow in the highest reaches of the veranada.

Here, Don Doming traveled by horse and on foot, climbing to the top of the surrounding hills in search of lawen, ancestral medicine.

That day, he gathered paramela, ñamkulawen, yipalmawe… and one more plant whose name I was never quite able to understand.

These medicinal plants sustain him and his family throughout the winter.

Transhumance not only provides food sovereignty, it also nurtures health sovereignty, a way of living deeply connected to the land, which is the most important thing for them.
