Another Ailey Extension workshop completed with the amazing @jeffreybynum 🙌🏾 I got to experience Jazz in a different way I hadn’t before and see you choreograph to each individual making everyone feel safe and supported. I learned so much as a dance teacher myself from you so thank you! 💕 We truly are the dream team Jeffrettes! 🤗💃🏽 Thank you all so much for your energy, support, and genuine kindness. 💕💕💕 I hope to dance with you all again someday in those metallic skirts. 😉 😂 Miss y’all already 😭 @aileyextension you’ve got me forever! Another Ailey Workshop for the books!!! ✨ To quote Mr. Ailey himself, “Dance is for everybody. I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people.” Dancing has always equaled liberation and joy to me, and Jeffrey’s Jazz class at Ailey helped me rediscover that last year. Round 2 was no different this year, and I will be forever grateful for the dance family we created this year in “The Jeffrettes”!!! ✨ We served up a little 1970s realness this year, and every time we did the dance, I had the biggest smile on my face. That’s bc our fearless leader and dance teacher made it FUN, even when drilling the technique. Thank you to @jeffreybynum for seeing all of us dancers as we are and reminding of our dancing purpose!!! To The Jeffrettes, let’s take it to the top—we’re gonna STOMP!!! ✨

🚨🚨 LONG CAPTION ALERT 🚨 🚨 I was getting back into dance classes this past fall, so I went to Ailey and took @jeffreybynum’s jazz dance class. I was LIVING and also GAGGED because I hadn’t moved my body like that in several years. Dancing in your mid 30s is no joke and you’ve got to condition AND stretch!!!! And don’t get me started on dance stamina 😂😂😂 Anyway, when Jeffrey told me he was choreographing the Student Showcase I immediately knew I wanted to perform in his piece. During this rehearsal process I was fortunate, blessed and favored to be in the company of this beautiful group of dancers. I felt safe, supported and encouraged and felt my dancer self start to return. Dancing in & rehearsing for the Performance Workshop with the @aileyextension was such a magical and beautiful experience. I loved every bit of it, even when we had those long nights of rehearsals and when I asked Jeffrey to cover the mirror on night 4 of rehearsal (sorry y’all) 😂😂😂. Jeffrey thank you for being you. You’re such a light and needed in this dance space. The cast - y’all are so amazing. I can’t wait to dance with y’all again so we can boom bop bop meow meow zaaaaaah (IYKYK). Ailey is always going to have a special place in my heart. I started my dance journey here and have returned again and again for classes, to perform, for an internship and to rehearse. Shout out to my peeps for coming through to support ya girl! Looking forward to performing again real soon 🥰💜✨🤗

Over the weekend, The Royalty Project’s Board & Staff Members set out for our first annual retreat. We were hosted at a beautiful historic chateau in midtown Memphis, Tennessee where we set off for a landmark tour including The Lorraine Motel which is now The National Civil Rights Museum. Our staff worked together in several think tank sessions to prepare for this Spring cycle and plan for the ever developing future of this monumental program. These are just some of the highlights from our weekend journey.
