Save the Alewife Brook invited Congresswoman Katherine Clark to visit the brook and hear their requests for her to have the Army Corps of Engineers dredge the sediment and restore the river. This would accompany, not replace, the effort to eliminate Combined Sewer Overflows, which requires state and local action. Our delegation (including Reps. Owens, Rogers, Sean Garballey, Barber and Decker) helped secure the funds for the study which recommended dredging to increase flow and storage capacity. The Brook has 34 to 40 inches of contaminated sediment which could be removed. It was encouraging to have Congresswoman Clark express interest in the project.

Yesterday, Mass Rivers joined our incredible member organizations and fellow advocates from across the Charles and Mystic River watersheds at the Charles River Esplanade to advocate for a CSO-free Massachusetts!

Mass Rivers was joined by the @charlesriverwatershed @charlesriverconservancy @mystic.river.watershed @conservationlawfoundation @savethealewifebrook and state Representative Greg Schwartz to demand a standard of healthy, sewage-free rivers across the Commonwealth and an end to decades of combined sewer overflows.

An enormous thank you to everyone who attended and spoke in support of clean and healthy rivers statewide! And a huge thank you to the organizers of the rally, the Charles River Watershed Association for the tremendous job mobilizing river advocates and the public.

For those who were not able to attend, but who are interested in uniting to end CSOs permanently, you can submit a public comment advocating against pollution in our rivers until October 30th! Learn how through the link in our bio. 🔗

“It’s Just Like Gardening”

Happy to take some photos for an Earth Day Cleanup! It was my first time attending one. I’ve gotten to know the Save The Alewife campaign over the last few months. Starting in 2016, when I started to explore the outdoors, I’ve become more and more hopeless as each earth day passes. The wanton destruction of public lands. The disregard for all life for a profit. The exponential increase of data centers all over the lands. It was a breath of fresh air to see an earth day focus on the next steps for a community that shares a natural space.

For those near the alewife in the eastern mass area, please follow their campaign. I am excited to continue working with them as they progress in their efforts to clean the alewife! @savethealewifebrook

What does earth day mean when people take pictures of things that will no longer exist? Every year I see beautiful landscapes, sunrises, sunsets, and night skies. What does it mean when a data center shows up and takes the land away? What about star link satellites that take away the night sky? Is it beautiful to see rockets launch into space that are then used to send bombs to children? Not at all.

Someone said to me that cleaning up the land is a bit like “gardening”. Everyone that helped cleanup the Alewife brought an awesome level of empathy and humanity to their surroundings. I really hope this contagion spreads all the way to western mass and to rest of the lands. We really need it every earth day. Which is everyday.

The potter hill dam is a travesty . This dam and fish ladder provide a choke point for the double breasted cormorant to feed until they vomit. The river herring have no chance of making upstream to spawn . Their internal gps, using information thousands of years old . The Town of Westerly dropped the ball. I imagine the consultants and engineers get paid well yet another earth day passes and I watch what should be an amazing herring run that should feed the entire River ecosystem . River herring and striped bass mortality go hand in hand . Maybe we can remove the dam before next earth day .

In October, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) officials presented multiple options for addressing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in the Charles and recommended adopting the option that would result in the largest increase in sewage discharges to the river.

Following a wave of public outrage, the MWRA Board of Directors has tabled a scheduled vote on the proposal at its November 19 meeting.

NOW is the time to make our voices heard and demand the elimination of CSOs in our waterways.

Paige Gromfin along with Kristin Anderson and attorney Eugene Benson testified today in front of the Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources at the Massachusetts State House on behalf of the organization Save The Alewife Brook in support of house bills 1031 and 1046 with respect to eliminating combined sewer overflows in Massachusetts waterways.
