Dismantling poaching syndicates since 2016, the inspiration for a movie being produced by Hollywood icon Margot Robbie. 🇿🇦🦏 @jamie_savingthewild
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The last couple days I’ve been processing the devastating news that two super Tuskers, likely from the Amboseli population where Saving the Wild works, has been killed just across the border in Tanzania.

My first super tusker experience was with Tim, and so this is the video I am sharing now. Just look at him. Can you even imagine putting a bullet into something so extraordinary?

Tim was the inspiration for Saving the Wild’s short film of epic proportions, Kimana Tuskers - see 📌 pinned post @saving_the_wild and watch for free. The film tells the story of the brotherhood - the bond between tuskers and the younger bulls who rely on them to navigate the ancient paths and survive droughts, and other environmental challenges.

Being in the presence of a tusker is to be in a state of reverence. It is a life changing spiritual experience that fills everyone I know who has had this experience with gratitude and awe. And so I struggle to understand why any human would want to kill them.

Someone out there knows the names of the hunters who destroyed these two tuskers in Tanzania. I have a donor who is willing to pay well for those names.

Come on people. Who out there got their thrills from destroying such a significant piece of the gene pool, happy to destroy something so precious to the world?

We need names.

A few weeks ago when Margot Robbie and her production company LuckyChap announced they were producing a movie inspired by @saving_the_wild I leaped at the opportunity to direct the press attention to the ongoing slaughter of rhinos in South Africa, driven by greed and corruption.🇿🇦 🩸🦏 Yes, I’m going to keep saying it, even when the other 99% choose to stay silent.

But after the fifth article came out with the word “Barbie” in the headline I decided to pull the plug on press until the new year. And here we are!

#2024YearOfTheRhino - it’s Saving the Wild’s 10 year anniversary and we are so pumped! Kingpin trials either side of the border, our team of brilliant pro bono attorneys challenging a justice system that has failed the environment and the people of South Africa, and we get to watch the crooked cabal on our Blood Rhino Blacklist begin to fall like a House of Cards…starting this month, Jan 22.

And circling back to the power of film, we were certainly cheering on Barbie and LuckyChap a few hours ago when they picked up the Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

If LuckyChap can make the world love Barbie, surely they can inspire the world to save rhinos?

A CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR HIP RHINOS! 💙🦏🙏🏽Thank you to everyone in the @saving_the_wild community who spoke out against the ongoing rhino massacres in Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park and cheered us on in our recent efforts to see that the rangers were supported with better intel.

Whether this arrest that has just gone down is pure coincidence, or a result of public pressure, either way it signals a possible turning of the tide after the worst year ever…

All eyes now on Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife CEO, Sihle Mkhize, who has agreed to allocate more resources to bolster the efforts of rangers.

During the arrest, HiP Manager Amos Tembe was injured and taken to hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery. Sadly, the rhino did not make it. The poacher was arrested while attempting to saw off the horn.

The province of KwaZulu Natal (KZN), home to the “birthplace of #rhino” Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, is facing its worst death toll ever with more than 300 rhinos killed so far. There are going to have to be some very big changes next year if the last of the rhinos are to be saved.

Arrests are going to have to become the norm in HiP, not the extremely rare occasion.

As for the courts, Saving the Wild has that covered, starting January 22 when KZN Court President Eric Nzimande faces 162 charges.

#BloodRhinoBlacklist - If we are to honour our rangers, we must honour them with justice.

Throughout the Christmas season, we keep all the rangers in mind who are out there patrolling and doing their best to keep the wild safe from harm. Huge sacrifice, unsung heroes.

Thank you 🙏🏽

Since I started working on the rhino crisis one decade ago, I have spent many Christmas “holidays” alone. Honestly, just too depressed to see anyone because it’s the worst time of year for rhinos in South Africa, with poachers Christmas shopping.

But not this year. As sad and angry as I am about the bloody state of South Africa’s devastated rhino population, I’m determined to rise above the pain and make sure the rhinos and the rangers get the platform they need - because only the truth can save them.

So here I am today testing out the new and delicious Papa Salt gin co-founded by my amazing friend Margot Robbie. This is serious work :-) But seriously…

If I want the world to listen, I best be prepared to throw a summer event that is truly unforgettable and like no other.

🇿🇦🩸🦏🗞️Sunday Times reports: KwaZulu-Natal [known as the “catch and release” province,] is experiencing its worst #rhino death toll ever, with at least 266 killed this year, most of them in state-run Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park in #Zululand.

Jamie Joseph said @saving_the_wild team of pro bono attorneys at Norton Rose Fulbright were preparing a case against the South African government relying on the constitutional right to the environment and the state’s failure to adequately prosecute environmental crimes.

Born in Zimbabwe, Jamie Joseph moved to Durban as a baby. Her passion for wildlife was sparked by a visit she made to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

“I was mesmerised. The #rhinos were everywhere. Nowadays, you’re lucky if you see even one rhino in the park. They’re being annihilated because of #corruption.”

Soon after leaving school, @jamie_savingthewild moved to the UK for five years, where she worked for Microsoft in London as an MSN web developer before moving back to South Africa.

She said that as a teenager she was “caught up in the wave of the ecstasy dance era in the late 1990s” when her then boyfriend was selling the drug for a syndicate.

“I was suddenly exposed to a lot of turf-war violence and entrenched corruption within the police and the judiciary, and those two years prepared for me for what I am fighting now. Whether it’s drug syndicates or rhino poaching syndicates, it’s the same thing — there is no rule of law. So it had to be me who took on this crusade - I know how the criminal networks function from the inside out.”

In October 2017, Jamie Joseph exposed what she calls her “Blood Rhino Blacklist” — a crooked cabal of justice officials taking bribes on rhino #poaching, child rape and other crimes against humanity.

She claimed many on the list paid money into the bank account of KwaZulu-Natal regional court president Eric Nzimande.

Nzimande appeared in the court this week on five counts of corruption, facing possible life in prison.

🦏💫🇳🇿 Herald on Sunday:

“Margot is a phenomenal actress and producer, a cinematic chameleon,” says Jamie Joseph, whose chance meeting in Los Angeles with the star led to plans for the new movie based on the work of her charity @saving_the_wild.

In 2017, Joseph exposed what she calls her “Blood Rhino Blacklist” - justice officials taking bribes on rhino poaching, child rape and other crimes against humanity. Her crusade has been supported by a number of famous faces, including English primatologist Dr Jane Goodall, American rockstar Dave Matthews and British singer-songwriter Leona Lewis.

In 2019, producers Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Anthony Mastromauro and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph visited Joseph in her arena, the vast open plains of Kruger National Park.

“The first thing that stood out to them was the abundance and beauty of the wild. From landing at Skukuza airport in Kruger to driving to the lodge one hour away, everyone was fizzing with excitement and commented on how they thought they wouldn’t see this many animals in a whole week, let alone an hour. Sadly, the whole time we were there, I think we only saw two rhinos, and one of them was dead,” says Joseph.

“I think for Margot, and for LuckyChap, this is the stuff of legacy. Not since Gorillas in the Mist has there been a movie that has an opportunity like this to help save a species.”
