@burnieglacierchalet is located in the Howson Range of northern British Columbia.

It sits in one of the most concentrated ski touring zones in the Coast Mountains. The terrain ranges from glaciated alpine bowls and long fall-line descents to 800 m tree runs directly behind the lodge, ideal for storm skiing.

You've probably NEVER heard of this place...

Spend a day at the @burnieglacierchalet during one of my plein air painting group trips this summer.

Sunrise missions before breakfast

Hot coffee

Fresh baked croissants on a wood fire stove

A half hour hike to a stunning glacier

Instructional group painting session for 3-4 hours

Another half hour up to the craziest alpine flower field you'll ever experience

And then back down to the chalet for Après and dinner (always followed by dessert)

All guided by the incredible owners of @sawbackalpine

It's hard to believe it's a real place, but tucked up into the mountains of northern BC near Smithers, is a gem not many have been to yet.

Some places are still off the map.

Seiland is one of them.

Remote mountains in Finnmark, Northern Norway. Untouched snow, majestic landscapes and spectacular fjords. Long ski lines dropping toward the Arctic sea. Unforgetable ski touring adventures. And Seiland House — a base for exploring terrain far beyond the usual ski-touring circuit.

We’re looking to connect with certified IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guides, ski-guide companies and tour operators interested in bringing their own groups to Seiland.

Photo 2: taking down the Stevenson screen at Burnie's weather station -- one of Canada's last standing manual weather stations! This is at 1000m above sea level. That's a lot of snow! No wonder the Burnie Glacier still extends down to hut elevation.

Worried about the super El Niño? This winter the total snowpack depth was over 7m on Middle Solitaire Glacier (2300m). I'm not sure exactly how deep: I dug a 3.5 m deep hole, then shoved my 320cm probe into the bottom of the pit until my shoulder prevented me from pushing it in any deeper. So let's say we get half the snow we did last winter... We'll still be ok!

Japanuary 2026 with @sawback 🇯🇵❄️

A childhood dream I forgot I even had, until suddenly it was happening. I grew up watching ski movies where all the pros would head to Japan to ski some of the deepest snow imaginable. I can honestly say this trip (and the snow) lived up to the hype!

Beyond the incredible skiing, I came home with so many unforgettable memories, a whole new appreciation for Japan + the food, and some amazing new friends. Thanks @sawback for making this one happen! 🩵

Oh hi there! Join me and @sawbackalpine at the @burnieglacierchalet next month!

This is such an incredible idea that the wonderful new hosts at this northern BC Backcountry chalet have invited me to join this summer. Painting in the most incredible setting!

I cannot wait to lead you through two four hour workshops in acrylic plein air painting, and provide you with skills to capture the beautiful landscapes that will be surrounding us.

This is a guided, catered trip, so all you have to do is sign up, get to Smithers with some hiking gear and enjoy 4 days in a stunning mountain range that not many get to see!
