One silver lining of this mess is dialing in my home recording game. In addition to lots of projects with local-ish friends, the interwebs really allow us to work with anyone in the world! My bud and international superstar Gordon Beadle invited Alex Lee-Clark and myself to record for German guitarist/singer/songwriter/bandleader Kai Strauss. Super fun! Here is a clip of the video (us Americans did not make the video) Check our the entire video on YouTube and listen on Spotify! Hit us up! We are available as a section for your horny needs! #silverlining #kaistrauss #horns #hornsection #trombone

America's classic music developed in the very early part of the 20th century. New Orleans, near the mouth of the Mississippi River, played a key role in this development. The city's population was more diverse than anywhere else in the South, and people of African, French, Caribbean, Italian, German, Mexican, and American Indian, as well as English, descent interacted with one another.

New Orleans had a great tradition of celebration. Opera, military marching bands, folk music, the blues, different types of church music, ragtime, echoes of traditional African drumming, and all of the dance styles that went with this music could be heard and seen throughout the city. When all of these kinds of music blended into one, jazz was born. It got some of its most striking features: its speed & its sheer energy from an African-American slang term, ‘jasm’ dating back to 1860, which means ‘vim’ or ‘energy.

Early jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton, whose own name was a euphemism for sex, first developed his own style playing piano in ‘sporting houses’ and to get extra tips he’d peek at a prostitute and her client through a peephole and time his playing with the pace of their revels.

From Swing to Bebop Space; from free jazz to Cool Jazz and Hard Bop, the evolution of jazz was led by a series of brilliant musicians such as Duke Ellington (listen to Ellington in Duke's Music Class), Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis. But Louis Armstrong was at the forefront. Before Armstrong, Dixieland was the style of jazz that everyone was playing. "Pops" as he was fondly called developed the idea of musicians playing during breaks that expanded into musicians playing individual solos. This became the norm. Hence, improvisation is the most defining feature of jazz. Improvisation is creating, or making up, music as you go along.

Jazz is about making something familiar into something personal. And for a music that evolved from the fringes of American society into one of the most influential, and enduring, musical movements; Jazz has the ultimate spell for timelessness.
