🎷Remembering Eddie Harris on his birthday🎉. Eddie never played it safe. A fearless innovator who fused soul, swing, funk, and electronics, he expanded what jazz could be—without ever losing the groove.

Born in Chicago in 1934, Eddie Harris was a conservatory-trained musician with an experimental streak that set him apart. His 1961 hit “Exodus” made him the first jazz artist to earn a gold record for a jazz instrumental, but Harris was never one to stay in one lane. He explored electric saxophone, experimented with electronic effects, and brought blues, funk, humor and inventive improvisation into his music.

His 1967 album The Electrifying Eddie Harris and the classic Swiss Movement, recorded live with Les McCann at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival, captured his ability to connect jazz improvisation with an irresistible groove. Harris was also a gifted composer and an inventive musician who was always looking for another sound to explore. He was too busy reinventing them.

Throughout his career, Harris blurred boundaries between genres and mindsets. His compositions “Listen Here,” “Freedom Jazz Dance” “Cold Duck Time” are now standards.
