I think the only way to deal with this LA fall heat wave is to dream about winter great grey owls in Minnesota

Part deux of the 2026 Sax-Zim Bog Bio Blitz day trip, 6/27/26.

It was a day of perfect weather, lots of bees, butterflies, dragonflies, birds, and then all the stuff other people were looking at that I wasn't. Can't believe it was nine weeks ago today! Before I know it, I'll (maybe) be in Colombia next March!

I was happy to spend much of the morning and part of the afternoon in a van with Sparky Stensaas of @saxzimbog , and two other ladies. Sparky is fun to do nature exploration with.

Song in my head: "With Or Without You/Shine Like Stars" by U2, live Minneapolis 3/30/92. Maybe La Luna was at that show.....💚✨?

1. La Luna - captured the night before by someone else and not seen by me at the time. This, the Poly and the sphinx were all captured by others and saved to show the crowd the next day. My first Luna of the Northwoods 😍💓. Put first, because this will get me a load more notice in the stupid Al-Gore-Rhythm.
2. Golden Northern Bumble Bee - lifer! Should be the first-ever noted for the Bog in iNaturalist if I ever get it uploaded there. So beautiful!
3. Polyphemus Moth with a Banded Tussock Moth - Banded Tussocks are of good size...just not Poly size!
4. Tricolored Bumble Bee - not a lifer, but they are special-looking for sure!
5. Northern Parula warbler nest - all that lovely moss and lichen 💚! Sparky had it staked out.
6. Frosted Whiteface (maybe) - any clarification welcome.
7. Laurel Sphinx - Northwoods lifer!
8. Dot-tailed Whiteface
9. Four-spotted Skimmer

Butterflies (and one moth) from the 2026 Sax-Zim Bog Bio Blitz, MN, 6/27/26.

There were a number of field trips available, but none I was crazy about until I saw a late entry, one for butterflies and dragonflies, which was right up my alley. Only three of us were signed up, and when they announced who was leading it, I found it was my friend and head of @saxzimbog Sparky Stensaas @sparky_stensaas !

So, we had a fun morning and early afternoon photographing and sometimes netting butterflies and a few sphinx moths. I have other photos of dragonflies and bumble bees that will follow later. We had much more that I didn't photograph, but these are all highlights.

Song in my head: "Unknown Caller" by U2.

1. Red-spotted or White Admiral - these were everywhere up north, all trip. So striking!
2. Snowberry Clearwing - on dogbane. I took probably 50-75 photos of this, and it will probably get its own post eventually.
3. Viceroy - note the black bar across the hind wing.
4. Baltimore Checkerspot - only my 3rd time seeing these, and two times have been at Sax-Zim Bog. We also had Harris' Checkerspot, but I caught it instead of photographing it.
5.-7. Northern Crescent
8. Atlantis Frittilary
9. White Admiral - female?
10. A little skipper peeking out from behind this peaflower.

Becoming a birder changed my life. Once I started paying attention to birds, everything else fell into place. I started looking at the natural world more closely, and decided to pursue a career in the natural sciences. That is what eventually led me to UWGB!

Because of this, one of my biggest passions is connecting people with birds. One way I try to do this is through my role as an officer of the Bird Alliance of UWGB. We are a student organization whose goal is to provide opportunities for students to learn more about birds and conservation locally.

The Bird Alliance (formerly Bird Club) was the first Audubon On Campus chapter in the nation when it was founded in 2018! We are also affiliated with the Northeastern Wisconsin Bird Alliance, a regional chapter of @audubonsociety.

To connect the student body with birds, we lead many events on and off campus, and in and out of the classroom. These include bird walks, field trips, scientific illustration events, owl pellet dissections, site tours, cleanups, bird themed game nights, and more. We have even volunteered at a Packer’s home game to hand out freebies to fans.

If you are a lover of the natural world, or want to learn more about it, this is the on-campus community for you! We are a safe space for anyone who wants to participate and welcome folks of all knowledge levels.

Please message me or email us at (sobirdalliance@uwgb.edu) if you would like to get involved. We are on Instagram (@birdalliance_uwgb), Discord, and Involve.

I will continue to lead posts with Modest Sphinxes until there's a reason to do otherwise 😄...

Just some flappy-winged shots of moths on light stations around the Welcome Center at Sax-Zim Bog, MN, for the first night of this year's Bio Blitz, 6/26/26. There might be more, and better, open-winged shots as time goes on from this big trip. Some very well might be Modest Sphinxes 😂.

Song in my head: "The Electric Co." by U2, from "Boy".

1. Modest Sphinx - if that wasn't clear already. Not sure what is causing the bluish cast, or if it just was bluish. Either way, this plushy of a moth is always huge, striking, and wildly colorful! And I had SO many up north.
2. One-eyed Sphinx - another very striking moth with wings flashed. Another numerous moth on my trip.
3. A. Lappet Moth - it's cousin, named The Drinker, is a British/European moth. I always love them here. Nice reddish individual.
4. Lettered Habrosyne Moth - a little blurry on the Center's moth light, but still stunning.
5. Polyphemus moth - most every night...
6. Virginia Ctenucha - also many most nights.
7. Pug Moth species - not 100% sure and iNat isn't IDing it correctly.
