I just leave this here while my computer is uploading another 3000 photos from a really special South Downs ridge day. Couldn't join the boys in the air today but grabbed the kit with @etterkevass and headed down to Amberley to take some pics.

The guys will spam the internet with more, I just wanted to post the first photo from the roll.

Manufacturer: AMS-Flight d.o.o.
Serial: 5E 251X80
Year of manufacture: 2005
Country of manufacture: Germany
First Australian registration: 09/12/2005
Airframe: Glider
Engines: None
Holder: Victorian Motorless Flight Group Inc.

Captured standing at Bacchus Marsh before being repositioned, VH-VMF is a two-seat DG-505 — a high-performance sailplane designed around efficient unpowered flight rather than propulsion.

🔧 With no engine onboard, the aircraft depends entirely on aerodynamic efficiency once released from tow. Its long, slender wings reduce induced drag and allow the glider to convert altitude into distance far more efficiently than a conventional powered aircraft with its engine at idle.

🗂️ Archive Context
This frame begins a small ground-operations sequence from my first proper day around gliders at Bacchus Marsh, showing the less glamorous but essential side of soaring operations before aircraft ever reach the launch point.

1️⃣ VH-VMF — DG-505 ELAN ORION

One of the more unusual ground-handling moments from the day: VH-VMF being repositioned using a Tesla Model Y.

Unlike powered aircraft, a glider has no engine or taxi thrust available to move itself around the airfield. Ground movement therefore depends on people, towing vehicles or other support equipment before the aircraft is positioned for launch.

🔧 The comparison is almost funny — a battery-electric road car moving a completely engine-less aircraft — but operationally it makes perfect sense. The glider only needs to be moved safely and slowly on the ground; all of its real performance begins once it is airborne.
