Textile Practices and Performances at Forschungscampus Dahlem
10.–13. September 2026

How Can Material Become Relation?
Soft Commons brings together artistic positions that understand textiles as social infrastructures.

Installations, material experiments, archives, interventions, and performances explore how materials can foster relationships, enable forms of community, and activate public space. At the heart of the exhibition is commoning—the collective production of knowledge, care, and agency through textile practice.

Situated at the intersection of material experimentation, artistic research, and social practice, Soft Commons opens up new perspectives on contemporary textile design and makes textiles tangible as active agents of societal transformation.

The exhibition is curated by Essi Johanna Glomb and Katrin Steiger and is a collaboration between the Textile and Material Design Department at weißensee academy of art berlin and Forschungscampus Dahlem. It coincides with Berlin Art Week and is part of the CURRENTS. Design in Berlin festival as well as the 80th anniversary programme of weißensee academy of art berlin, 80 Years.

We warmly invite you to join us for the exhibition’s varied accompanying programme. Performances by the participating artists will take place throughout the exhibition period. Curator-led tours will be held on Friday and Saturday at 4 pm and on Sunday at 2 pm.

The programme culminates in the finissage on Sunday from 5–7 pm with
‚What’s the Matter…? Experiencing Taste Through a Collective Performance‘.
Together with the participating artists, the curators invite you to experience taste through a collective performance exploring the interplay of flavour, texture, and memory. For the performative finissage dinner, please RSVP by email at essi.glomb@kh-berlin.de.

In Mulden

In Mulden is a knitted seating landscape of hollows and hills, a form which, when entered together, promotes closeness and encourages moving nearer to the people we love outside of the romantic context. An accompanying guide promotes open communication and supports the honest expression of needs and boundaries; because touch, too, requires a language that has to be learned. The work is an invitation to bring physical closeness back into everyday relationships: actively and with awareness.

Since February 2026, I have been a guest professor for Experimental Design at weißensee school of art and design berlin.

Together with Essi J. Glomb, I will be covering Prof. Nadine Göpfert’s parental leave over the next two semesters.

I’m very much looking forward to a stimulating and inspiring collaboration with Prof. Essi J. Glomb, as well as with the students and colleagues from the Textile + Material Design department and beyond.

Pictures 2–5: Final presentations of the WS25/26 project NO STRINGS ATTACHED (Prof. Göpfert) at the Chair of Experimental Design. The project was primarily supervised by Prof. Nadine Göpfert; I joined for the install and final presentations together with my colleague Kim Cordes in February.

Touchy explores the haptic potential of clothing.
Different knitting techniques create a distinct tactile experience for each piece. Worn close to the body, they become tools for sensing rather than for display.

Larissa Schieberl „wait a second“
„Wait a second“ plays with the limits of the functionality of furnishings. Textile manipulation gently unbalances familiar forms and functions, causing us to pause and open up new perspectives on everyday objects beyond internalized conventions. The oversized fur table creates a scale reminiscent of childhood and encourages a playful reencounter with this familiar object.
