Roughly 2,000 NYC students were stranded without a bus assignment at the beginning of the school year, an oversight which especially hurts students with disabilities who miss critical support programs. “He misses his therapy. He misses schooling. His routine is completely thrown off. It's terrible,” said the mom of a 9-year-old boy with autism in @gothamist . Advocates continue to push the city to make sure every student has the transportation and basic supports they need to succeed this school year. Read more at the link in our bio.

🚌 Every student deserves a reliable ride to success. Yesterday, The Shield Institute joined families, advocates, and the Road to Better Busing Coalition to call for urgently needed improvements to NYC’s school bus system. Weekly RESPECT Update for 9/12/25. As the Chapter leader of my D75 School, I was asked this week about the amount of paraprofessional vacancies we had. SOME of my fellow colleagues have over 100 paraprofessional vacancies in their schools. This is UNACCEPTABLE . AS of this week Chapter Leaders reported MORE than 7,000 paraprofessional vacancies exist across New York City Public School. This is a crisis driven by wages that do not reflect the essential work paraprofessionals perform. This is an injustice to our paraprofessionals and a disservice to our students with disabilities, who depend on consistent, skilled support every day. New York City must do better. Respect paraprofessionals, raise their wages, and invest in the people who help our students thrive. Our students deserve stability, dignity, and fully staffed classrooms. #RESPECT #backbone DO BETTER @nycschools @nycmayor

Buses that never show up. Commutes that take hours longer than they should. Every year, AFC hears from hundreds of families navigating our dysfunctional, outdated school bus system. With Albany's help, we have a chance to finally modernize our school transportation system, but the clock is ticking. Tell your elected officials: pass S.1018/A.8440 before the legislative session ends. NYC students deserve safe, reliable transportation to school. No child should miss class because they can’t get there. Visit the link in our bio to take action. #NYCSchools #SchoolTransportation #EducationEquity #NYCParents #PublicEducation #NYCStudents #TransportationJustice #SpecialEducation #TakeAction #KidsDeserveBetter Can NYC finally overhaul our dysfunctional school busing system? Yes, but we need Albany to take action before June 4th.

🚇 Demand More from Student OMNY! Join us on Monday, March 23rd to take action for NYC students. RSVP via link in bio! The Problem ❌Nearly half of all NYC students are ineligible for Student OMNY cards because they live “too close” to school or ride the yellow bus ❌These students are locked out of taking advantage of extracurriculars and exploring the city on weekends, holidays, and school breaks ❌Students shouldn’t risk fare evasion consequences just for using their four swipes or dealing with card reliability issues at the turnstile What We’re Fighting For ✅ Unlimited rides ✅ Faster card replacements ✅ Student OMNY access for all Join Us 👥 Who: Students, parents, and supporters 📍 Where: City Hall Park 📅 When: Monday, March 23 @ 4:30 PM following the preliminary budget hearing ❓ Why: We want to ensure transportation is provided for ALL students and it needs to be prioritized in the NYC DOE budget!

Happy Transit Equity Day! And happy birthday to civil rights icon Rosa Parks, who this day was created in honor of for her fight for transit justice and racial equity during Jim Crow in 1955. Parks’ defiance to racial segregation on a bus by not giving up her seat to a white person sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and what we know today as the Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks was a life long public servant. Did you know she worked for Congressman John Conyers from 1965 until her retirement in 1988, assisting with housing and job discrimination issues in Detroit? Transit Equity Day was created by a network of labor unions to commemorate Parks and other civil rights icons and to advocate for accessible, reliable, and affordable transit powered by renewable energy for all people. As workers, riders, organizers, and advocates for transit equity, may we all remember the instrumental way that transit sparked one of the largest organized fights for civil rights in our country’s history, and keep that energy alive as we continue to fight for justice.
