Dreams and Surprises:  Dances, Projections and Sound
Dreams and Surprises is a collaboration between Molly Davies (video), Polly Motley (choreography) and Philip Roy (video technical director), with a live sound performance by Loz Leigh. In conjunction with video, music, dance and theatre students from De Montfort University, UK the work was performed in April 2026 as part of the exhibition, residue…what remains, curated by Sue Schroeder.

Within Davies’s video environment, The GRID Map Of Space, originated by Barbara Dilley in Boulder Colorado at the Naropa Institute, was taught as part of contemplative dance and improvisation training and forms the basis of the physical work. Under Motley’s direction, The GRID Map Of Space expands beyond the three basic movements of standing, walking, changing direction to include, when desired by the performers, sitting, lying down, jumping, virtuosic dancing. The score may expand to include storytelling, singing, and idiosyncratic gestures. In contrast, everything except standing and moving to another spot, may be eliminated. This is called Standing in Proximity and is a contemplative performance practice in itself scored by Motley. THE VILLAGE, devised by Arawana Hayashi, is also incorporated into the work. This includes bowing and various group arrangements. All participants respond to the work of the others, attentive to time, timing, appetite and delight.

You’re invited to Versaille Jones’s LIFT Artist Residency with Core Dance! 🌱

Join us in our downstairs studio to experience the creative process on Saturday, September 26, from 6:30- 8 PM.

Register to join us at the Salon at the link in our bio 🔗

Versaille says, “My work grounds itself in the investigative process of deconstructing one’s own perception of memory. Exploring ways in which subjective timelines can birth isolated dimensions of truth.

I take interest in the multiplicitous nature of how each life is experienced and how messily they entangle themselves. In these crossing dimensions, the absurd and macabre are plucked out and placed under trials of reconfiguration until they morph into exaggerated versions of their former selves.”

On Friday, September 11 from 7–10 PM, Burlington City Arts’ Community Room will transform for Interstitial Yoko Dreams, an immersive evening of sound, film, and visual art 🌀

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s multimedia happenings, the event pairs Craig Mitchell’s original Yoko Ono remixes with artist video projections curated from the Media Factory and John Killacky.

Among the featured films is body of water, created by longtime collaborators Sue Schroeder and Christian Meyer for Global Water Dances 2023. Filmed in the 50°F waters of Stößensee in Berlin, the work explores the many ways water connects with and informs our human nature while drawing attention to environmental concerns affecting Berlin’s waterways 🌊

Through movement and film, body of water reflects the larger mission of Global Water Dances, which brings artists together around the world to inspire awareness and action surrounding water preservation and conservation.

If you’re in Burlington for Art Hop, stop by, take in the projections and sound, and experience body of water alongside work from more than 20 participating artists!

Looking forward to being in residency with CORE Dance this season. During my time in the CORE studios, I will be researching a new work and teaching morning class on Tuesdays. Read more about my class below:

Collaging Movement: Guided Improvisation & Contemporary Technique

This class approaches movement as a living collage, allowing participants to layer sensation, impulse, structure, and imagination into a continuously evolving composition. Blending guided improvisational scores and technical exercises, dancers will explore how interdisciplinary elements can be assembled into a cohesive, dynamic whole, all while sharpening their ability to direct focus, make choices, and drive their impulses through curiosity and play.

Thank you, @coredance and Sue for the opportunity.
