The space economy’s future depends on the foundations we build for it today.
That message came through in the remarks of Dr. Diane Howard at The Space Mindset: Navigating Space Policy, Diplomacy, and Global Leadership during the UN General Assembly Science Summit.

Dr. Howard connected commercial innovation to a shared responsibility: creating the conditions for space activities to grow safely, sustainably, and with lasting public benefit.

She highlighted three priorities:

🧭 Design governance that enables progress. Clear policies and meaningful dialogue among governments, industry, and international organizations can support innovation while strengthening safety and accountability.

♻️ Build a space economy that can endure. As orbital activity increases, managing debris and investing in the reuse, recycling, and repurposing of space assets become essential to protecting the environment future missions will depend on.

🤝 Sustain diplomacy beyond political cycles. Long-term cooperation requires relationships that endure leadership changes and shifts in national priorities. Continued engagement builds the trust needed to address shared challenges.

Her call to pursue “mutually assured benefit” stayed with me. It offers a powerful direction for leadership: shape policies and partnerships around the value we can create together—and the space environment we all depend on.

I’m grateful to Dr. Howard for bringing her expertise in commercial space policy, law, and governance to our summit. Her perspective underscored how today's decisions will shape whether the growing space economy delivers lasting opportunity.

My thanks as well to H.E. Rosalía Arteaga Serrano, Ambassador Anil Trigunayat, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Al-Aseeri, Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Schrogl, Michal Brichta, Dr. Masami Onoda, and Director Aarti Holla-Maini. Together, their perspectives connected diplomacy, national capability, governance, research, and international cooperation to our shared future.

A nation’s space ambitions can reach farther when its neighbors become partners.

That was a powerful takeaway from Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Schrogl’s remarks at the Science Summit's Space Mindset: Navigating Space Policy, Diplomacy, and Global Leadership session at the United Nations General Assembly.

Drawing on the ESA - European Space Agency’s experience and growing cooperation among regional space organizations, he showed how regional partnerships connect national ambitions to shared scientific, economic, and diplomatic opportunities.

Prof. Schrogl highlighted three reasons this cooperation matters:
🌍 Combine capabilities to achieve more. Shared resources, expertise, and programs let countries pursue goals that would be difficult to achieve alone.

🤝 Build relationships across regions. He described growing coordination among the European Space Agency, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization, the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency, and the African Space Agency. These connections create opportunities to learn from different regional experiences and identify common priorities.

🧭 Strengthen global cooperation through regional action. Regional organizations connect national needs with international dialogue, giving countries practical ways to contribute to peaceful space activities and shared governance.

His perspective stayed with me: cooperation becomes meaningful when countries identify what they can contribute, what they can accomplish together, and how those partnerships can endure.

My thanks as well to H.E. Rosalía Arteaga Serrano, Ambassador Anil Trigunayat, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Al-Aseeri, Dr. Diane Howard, Michal Brichta, Dr. Masami Onoda, and Director Aarti Holla-Maini. Together, their perspectives connected diplomacy, governance, national capability, research, and international cooperation to our shared future.

The next generation’s opportunities in space begin with the partnerships we build today.

That message came through in the prerecorded presentation of Dr. Masami Onoda of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) at The Space Mindset: Navigating Space Policy, Diplomacy, and Global Leadership during the UN General Assembly Science Summit.

Dr. Onoda connected international collaboration to three priorities for our shared future:

🌍 Pursue discovery together. Through international partnerships in lunar exploration, asteroid research, and other scientific missions, countries can contribute complementary expertise and accomplish more together.

🤝 Connect people as well as institutions. Cooperation grows through relationships among researchers, space agencies, universities, and industry. These connections turn shared ambitions into practical opportunities to learn and contribute.

🚀 Build capacity for the next generation. Research exchanges, education, and international programs give emerging scientists and professionals the experience and networks to participate in humanity’s future in space.

The legacy of a space mission extends beyond what it discovers. It also includes the people it prepares, the knowledge it shares, and the partnerships that make future progress possible.

I’m grateful to Dr. Onoda for contributing JAXA’s perspective to our summit and honored to feature her in my new book, What’s Space Got to Do With It? Out of This World Leadership, now available:

The future of space depends on the trust we build here on Earth.

That message came through powerfully in the remarks of Ambassador Anil Trigunayat, former Ambassador of India, at The Space Mindset: Navigating Space Policy, Diplomacy, and Global Leadership during the UN General Assembly Science Summit.

He reminded us that space is woven into everyday life—from weather forecasting and telecommunications to agriculture, healthcare, and disaster response. As strategic competition grows, protecting those shared benefits requires sustained diplomacy.
Ambassador Trigunayat connected the future of space to three responsibilities:

🌍 Keep humanity at the center. Space progress should improve lives on Earth. He highlighted India’s approach to affordable missions, international partnerships, and cooperation with the Global South as pathways to broader participation.

🤝 Build cooperation through mutual interest, mutual sensitivity, and mutual respect. These three principles give nations a foundation for working together, even when their priorities and perspectives differ.

🛡️ Protect the systems—and the future—we share. Cyber threats, space debris, and the risk of conflict threaten services communities depend on. Diplomacy must address these vulnerabilities while preserving opportunities for future generations.

His challenge stayed with me: as we reach farther into space, we must remain accountable to the people whose lives our decisions affect. Scientific achievement and human progress belong in the same conversation.

I’m grateful to Ambassador Trigunayat for bringing this diplomatic perspective to our summit and honored to feature him in my new book, What’s Space Got to Do With It? Out of This World Leadership, now available:

Knowing where a satellite is does not tell us why it is there.

I spoke with The Debrief about research that used simulations to examine how a spacecraft could observe another from multiple angles while managing limited fuel. The study does not demonstrate a deployed surveillance capability. However, it raises an important question: as operations near other spacecraft become more sophisticated, how do we assess capability and intent?

This is where space situational awareness meets diplomacy. In the international discussion I convened during the UN General Assembly Science Summit, our speakers addressed satellite tracking, information sharing, and the need for stronger space traffic coordination. Knowing what is happening in orbit is essential. Clear expectations and communication are also essential, helping operators interpret what they see and respond responsibly.

Thank you to Christopher Plain for including my perspective in The Debrief.

I’m also grateful to H.E. Rosalía Arteaga Serrano, Ambassador Anil Trigunayat, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Al-Aseeri, Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Schrogl, Dr. Diane Howard, Michal Brichta, and Director Aarti Holla-Maini for contributing to our Science Summit conversation. Dr. Masami Onoda of JAXA shared a prerecorded presentation, available separately below.

What happens when a policy designed to solve one challenge creates another on the ground?

Development goals do not exist in isolation. A policy decision aimed at boosting climate resilience or agricultural output can intentionally or unintentionally re-shape household gender dynamics, economic inequality, and local security, etc.

The Vice Versa Global team was at ICRAF in Gigiri, Nairobi, participating in and covering the workshop "Taking SDG Interactions Seriously: African Perspectives on Policy Coherence, Trade-offs, and Integrated Development" at Science Summit 2026!

We joined researchers & policymakers to explore SDG trade-offs, climate insurance for pastoralists, gender equity & policy coherence.

Yesterday was a day of meaningful conversations, learning and new perspectives at the Science Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

The first session on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offered an opportunity to reflect on the importance of collective action, innovation and inclusive approaches in advancing sustainable and equitable development.

The mental health session later in the day was equally thought-provoking. We explored the realities surrounding mental wellbeing, including access to support, stigma and the need for more inclusive approaches to mental healthcare. I was particularly interested in the conversation around Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the mental health sector from its potential to improve access to information and support to the important questions around ethics, privacy, human connection. Which were brought out clearly by Professor Payal Arora.

I learnt that progress should not only be measured by the technologies we develop, but also by how effectively those innovations improve people's lives. It was a grateful for the opportunity to listen, engage, ask questions and learn from diverse perspectives.

Food for thought..we often say there should be no distinction between mental and physical health, but in reality there is stigma, unequal access and differences in resources. What is the biggest barrier preventing us from treating mental health as an essential part of healthcare rather than an afterthought?

A special thank you to the panelists who made the mental health conversation so insightful and engaging, led by Katherine Marshall Woods, Psy.D. alongside Kauna Malgwi from Nigeria, Payal Arora who joined virtually, and Arthur Lima from Brazil.

I truly appreciated the diverse perspectives they brought to the conversation and the opportunity to learn from experiences and insights spanning different parts of the world. The discussion around mental health, technology and the potential role of AI in expanding access to support was particularly my interest.
Thank you for creating space for such an important conversation. 🌍

A nation’s space ambitions become real when its people gain the capability to carry them forward.

That was a central message from H.E. Dr Mohamed Al-Aseeri, CEO of the Bahrain Space Agency, at The Space Mindset: Navigating Space Policy, Diplomacy, and Global Leadership during the Science Summit at the United Nations General Assembly.

Drawing on Bahrain’s journey, Dr. Al-Aseeri showed how emerging space nations can turn bold aspirations into lasting capability—and contribute to a global industry.

His remarks offered three lessons that reach well beyond space:

🧭 Give ambition a practical roadmap. Align your vision with national priorities, available resources, and achievable milestones. Clear policies and strong institutions create the foundation for progress and give partners confidence to participate.

🚀 Build people through real opportunities. Education and specialized training matter, but working on actual missions turns knowledge into capability. Bahrain’s first domestically designed and built satellite developed the people, infrastructure, and experience needed to lead future missions.

🤝 Make partnerships a pathway to contribution. Dr. Al-Aseeri described a progression from learning alongside others to collaborating on missions, developing technologies together, and contributing expertise internationally. Emerging nations can build distinctive strengths that make them valuable partners.

He also connected national capability to economic opportunity. A sustainable space sector requires an ecosystem where government, universities, industry, startups, small businesses, and investors can work together.

For leaders and entrepreneurs, his message raises a practical question: Are we building the capability to sustain our vision—and creating opportunities for others to contribute to it?
