Neil Macdonald is a skateboarding archivist, journalist, and writer, who has contributed to most major UK skateboarding publications, and through his Instagram account @scienceversuslife curates a tasteful archive of mostly UK skateboarding photographs. He’s spent the last six years compiling photographs and conducting hundreds of hours of interviews to make Elsewhere, a beautiful 464-page book that tells the story of UK skateboarding from 1987 to 2002 by the people who were in it - from the shops to magazines, videos, brands, skateboarders, backyard ramps, who was doing what where, and so much more. ELSEWHERE! back for a cracking feature in issue one

On one level, Neil Macdonald’s (@scienceversuslife) book is an oral and visual history of British skateboard culture from 1987 to 2002. But that is to put it simply: this book plunges head-first into the dizzying throng of voices, texture and colour that pulsate from this ecosystem shaped by passion, love, hate, youth, folly, success, ambition, grit, mundanity and violence.

Neil emerged from the very scene he documents. A participant and an observer, he skated, hosted club nights, DJ’d and everything in between. He is now the biggest skate archivist in the UK, and Elsewhere is the culmination of that work.
