More importantly, could this method be applied across different coral species? 😮

I think this is fascinating research and a great achievement by the scientists involved. 🙌👏 Since coral research only gained significant attention in the 1960’s, but coral diseases received greater scientific attention in the 70s and ’80s, as bleaching events and suspected bacterial infections raised concerns about reef health. 😰

I think many hobbyists have been experimenting with similar principles for years, perhaps some without fully understanding the underlying biological processes involved. 😯

Cloning, Chimerism and Grafting aren’t new to the hobby, but the science behind coral fusion, compatibility, and potential resilience goes far beyond. 😌

One of the biggest challenges in identifying and preventing coral diseases is the complexity of coral biology. Pathogens affecting corals can be bacterial, fungal, protozoan, or even viral.

There’s always debate whether hobbyists are ahead of scientists or simply overestimate their knowledge. 🤔

Personally, I don’t necessarily agree with either.. Many hobbyists are incredibly knowledgeable, some have extensive professional or academic backgrounds, and others may be scientists themselves. 😌

I think both perspectives overlook something.. hobbyists can bring valuable hands on experience, while scientists work to validate observations and understand the mechanisms behind them.. but just because something hasn’t been published doesn’t mean scientists haven’t been investigating it. Research, peer review, and publication can take years. 😪

There’s often a significant gap between discovering something, understanding the mechanisms behind it, and seeing the findings formally published.

Perhaps this may explain why PpF hasn’t been published. 😉

In our next post we’ll talk about coral fusion across other species. And the difference between Chimerism and Grafting.

Nowadays anything multicolored is labeled as Chimera. 😅

@scireef certainly knows about Chimerism! 🔥🙌💜

From reefing to print! 🪸📸

I’m excited to finally share COLORS OF THE REEF 2027, my first reef photography calendar!

12 months, 12 of my favorite macro photographs, capturing the incredible colors, textures and tiny details of reef life.

But there’s more to these animals than meets the eye. Each photograph is accompanied by a short insight into their fascinating biology.

In collaboration with multi-druck, we turned these images into a high-quality wall calendar. A special printing process brings out the vibrant colors and fine details of the photographs.

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at the printing process! 🎥

Colors of the Reef 2027 is available now!

If you like the project, I’d really appreciate you sharing it with fellow reef lovers! 🙌
