The People of PURE LAND - selections from our mid-August event at @claybarbln

This edition of PURE LAND honored Hungry Ghost Festival, a time when Taoists and Buddhists perform rituals and offer food and drink to venerate the deceased. Loud music at night, in the form of Chinese operas — or in our case a club night, is meant to attract and please the ghosts.

All attendees came together under the premise of sharing a heartfelt offering to the larger community and their own ancestors 🧧

On my birthday weekend in late May, I gathered all my friends at @kraftwerkberlinofficial for @cccccontra, co-curated by @skrillex, in what became one of my top club events in recent memory. The celebration, of course, was also a research opportunity for my latest deep dive article for @electronicbeats.

My cultural commentary analyses the last two decades of Sonny John Moore’s career and the outsized cruelty he faced in his ascent. I make the argument that Skrillex translated UK dubstep’s nuance into an emotional language in caps lock that was legible to a generation of Americans who had little to no electronic music literacy. I also discuss the power struggle around taste, what is considered “proper” or “worthy” dance music, and who exactly gets to make this call.

Social media is remarkable at flattening nuanced opinions, so I do encourage you to read the entirety of the piece and sitting with it before drawing any immediate conclusions.

Finally found the Neutral Milk Hotel, turns out it’s in Quanzhou.

A collection of my favorite mistranslations and unintentionally great signage.

CRYSPACE ~ 6th DECEMBER @kwia.berlin

[emo/shoegaze/pop-punk/post-rock/numetal/triphop/ambient]

It’s 2006. You’re slumped on the school bus, hoodie up, bangs obscuring one eye. Your Motorola Razr buzzes with a text from your crush reading “OMG parker just asked me out xD”.

Devastated, you ditch class, wander into the cold blasting Hawthorne Heights through tangled Skullcandys. You wish you could go somewhere warm, dimly lit, with people who truly understand you.

Enter: CRYSPACE - the yearlong lovechild between three friends and emos at heart @arnav.303 @scorp__corp @club.dad who bonded over melancholic frequencies. Now, for the first time, we’re bringing that energy to the sonic safehouse @kwia.berlin, along with special guests @fishfluuu_ and @etrnlw4ke joining for DJ sets and a live performance.

So put on your studded belts, band tees, black nail, and skate on over for a night of communal catharsis T_T
