It’s hard to be grateful or feel thankful when bad things happen. It hurts my heart to say that my friend Scott, pictured here with his beloved wife Mel, passed away in his sleep. I get to work with a lot of really amazing couples, but Scott and Mel became my best friends after their wedding. When I met Scott two years ago, he and Mel were hiring me to be their wedding photographer. He was a lot of wonderful things to a lot of people. He was the fun uncle who would make each niece and nephew a custom birthday cake. He was the actor who would pass out Cadbury eggs instead of ammunition during performances of Les Miz. He was the lovable/annoying guy on Facebook who just can’t stop talking about how much he adores his wife. He was a talented director, happy-go-lucky, uplifting man who truly cared about others. I could go on for ages. But to me, he became a protective big brother. I said to Mel one day, Your husband is the BEST!! Can’t you just find another Scott for me? Mel turned to me in all seriousness and said, "I wish there was Pepper, but I’ve been looking a really long time and he’s the only one like him. But, I would be totally happy to share him with you!” LOL We live in Utah and the joke stuck, when I wanted to see them, I’d send a group text saying that the second wife wanted to come hang out, it never got old. But then came a terrible call, and I walked into the room where Mel was sitting and she said “Pepper, our husband died….” I am devastated. I have never seen a man love his wife as much as Scott loved Mel. Watching him love her was a privilege for me, and it gave me hope not just for myself, but that everyone can find their unique better half. That they had less than 2 years together is an outrage, and that he died following a routine tonsillectomy makes me angry. I’m not sure who I’m angry at, but I’m angry and I’m sad. I miss skiing together, I miss dinners, but most of all I miss laughing. Scott had the best laugh, it would infect you, and no matter what was going on in your world, if he was laughing, you would be laughing too. He brought light and joy and love and side splitting laughter into the world. And cake....

The guy on the right is Scott Montgomery, pictured here after the closing of Annie Jr a couple summers ago. He directed Annie Jr and Elf Jr for us, he attended almost every Academy show (and he even performed in a couple!), he visited our classes frequently, and he helped in countless ways to make the Academy what it is today.
Scott passed away in his sleep yesterday morning. We love him, we will miss him, and he will always be a part of our family. We are all better today and we will be better forever because we had him.

I just text Scott yesterday telling him that I was at CHURCH and that the building was actually still standing. And he said, “Of course it is.” ❤️ I received the news that my dear friend passed away this morning. My heart is in a million pieces. He was one of my closest & TRUEST friends. I KNEW that he had my back, always. He saw potential in me and lovingly pushed me in every show he directed. But beyond that, he believed in me in LIFE. He was there during some of my most difficult times. I never doubted his love for me. What a gift that was. My girls adored him.
His artistic vision was beyond anything I’ve seen. He had the ability to make everyone he interacted with feel sincerely loved and important. His beautiful shows reflected that love.

He had a heart of gold. He inspired so many and genuinely led by example. He changed my life.

Scott Montgomery, I will miss all of your funny texts and inside jokes. I’ll miss your encouraging smile & boisterous laugh. Thank you. For everything. I just can’t imagine my world without you in it. 💔You changed me for the better. I bet you’re up there catching up with David as we speak. I promise to always keep pushing and I won’t let you down. I love you so much my sweet friend. Until we meet again.
