we’re so used to chasing the last bit of light that sometimes we forget to see what happens when we let it leave.

past sunset. past blue hour. when the mountains disappear into silhouettes and the sky becomes bigger than everything underneath it.

we stayed that night for the Perseids.
Every year, Earth passes through the trail of an ancient comet, sending pieces of it burning through our sky.

and there we were beneath it all, watching pieces of the universe disappear above us, feeling impossibly small.

I think we need that every once in a while.
to remember how little space we take up in something so endless.

how briefly we get to be here.
and how beautiful it is that we are.

HOW TO SHOOT STARRY NIGHTS ✶

✶ STAY OUT LATERRRR.
My biggest tip. Dark-ish is not dark. Give the last light time to completely disappear. The difference another 30–60 minutes can make is wild. Just when you think it’s dark enough, stay a little longer.
Get away from towns, streetlights + light pollution. Your camera sees light your eyes barely notice.

✶ WIDE + FAST.
A wide lens + open aperture. 15-30 second long exposure client has to stay still!!

✶ PLAN AROUND THE SKY.
Meteor showers, moon phases + where the Milky Way will be can completely change what you’re able to photograph. A little planning goes a long way.

✶ DON’T FEAR ISO.
A properly exposed noisy image is better than an underexposed file you have to destroy in post.

✶ WATCH YOUR SHUTTER.
Stars move. Leave your shutter open too long and those tiny points become trails.

✶ MANUAL FOCUS.
Autofocus struggles in the dark. Find a bright star or distant light, magnify it, nail focus manually + leave it there.

✶ TRIPOD. ALWAYS.

Truth is, I have no idea what I’m doing, but I wanted to do this for the future generation of my hometown. I’m just tired of seeing negativity or weird shit being pushed on kids on social media/news/schools etc. So I thought I could sit and watch or try and do something positive. I want to see young men rise up in my community and become animals in whatever they decide to pursue. Young leaders going against the grain and not letting anyone tell them they can’t achieve their goals. I’ll be the first to say im not the best coach at anything, but if I can at least be a spark of motivation or assist a sail in the right direction then im happy with that. I told these guys they’re at the age where life’s about to get crazy but if they have goals on the horizon it’ll help all the negative bs fly past them as they continue to keep their eyes on the prize and keep showing up. I’ll keep you guys posted for the next one, parents or groms comment/dm if you want to join. It’s not a full time class it’s just when I’m free I’ll get something going and I’m not charging anything. North Shore Boys let’s get to work🥷🏻💪🏽❤️

“I was in the right place at the right time, I paddled as hard as I could, air dropped down the face looking at the reef and then pulled up into the barrel which felt as big as my bedroom!!
