Vivien having her make up applied by one Mrs Pearce for her role as Cynthia in 'Fire Over England' which premiered in the UK 86 years ago today.

Korda had wanted to make a film about Queen Elizabeth I for some time and decided to adapt A.E.W Mason's novel for the screen. The film was assembled with unusual care; Erich Pommer was brought in to produce along with the American Director William F Powell and the cinemaphotographer James Wong Howe. Fresh from her role as Anne Boleyn in the Regents Park production of 'Henry VIII', Vivien found herself back in Tudor costume to play Cynthia, a lady in waiting at the Court of Queen Elizabeth I (scene stealer Flora Robson), who falls in love with a naval spy played by Laurence Olivier, who is sent by the Queen to the court of King Philip II of Spain to bring back a list of traitors and foil their assassination plot. The romantic scenes between Vivien and Larry were given an added piquancy by their real-life love affair.

A.E.W Mason hated what Korda did to his book, but it scarcely mattered as the film was a great success- it was the cinematic breakthrough for Vivien that Korda had hoped for, and 'Fire Over England' would also be the first British film to have a Hollywood premier.
